Adhesive for glass?
Not sure if this thread is in the correct section: mods - please relocate if necessary; thank you.
I am aware that adhesive for glass (as in joining two pieces of glass, so that they are back as one piece again) is available. But will 'superglue' be effective? And is so-called 'glass adhesive' any good, anyway? Al. |

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Found the Loctite superglue for glass very good, it has been holding together a broken drink glass for several years now(only repaired because it had an award inscription on it).
Sometimes if you get the two pieces at the right angle the repair becomes almost invisible..but being a superglue you have not got a lot of time to mess around. |

Re: Adhesive for glass?
yep, I've stuck broken glass together with no-name superglue. As always, getting the surfaces really clean is critical.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
The best thing I have ever find for sticking glass is silicon rubber, I remember that in the '50's Dowl Corning silicon was used for making fish tanks and the glass would break before the joint went.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
I also have used Locktite glass bond successfully on glass to glass joints. I think this adhesive needs UV light to cure the glue.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Thanks for your replies: I will attempt a repair with 'Superglue' - and then let you know the result.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Yes, that worked. Only question is this: how long will it last before the adhesive 'gives up' ?

Re: Adhesive for glass?
A glass lamp shade I mended using the original Loctite glass bond is still perfectly sound after more than a decade, although from the posts in the earlier thread identified in #4 it seems that the current stuff has a different formulation.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Amendment to my post #8. I've just carefully picked up the glass panel - and the glued joint failed! And yes, I did thoroughly clean the two mating surfaces first.
So time to try Loctite glass bond. Al. |

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Superglue does degrade (very slowly) in water, so leave the broken repair in water for a week before removing the glue.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
What about the glue used to adhere rear view mirrors to the windshield?
I never had any luck with superglue & glass. I have used Duco Cement with success on china, but I have not used it for any sort of eating glassware. |

Re: Adhesive for glass?
If the site of the joint will not be in view, the very best stuff is the thick black adhesive used to glue in car windscreens. Wear disposable gloves though, as it's VERY sticky.

Re: Adhesive for glass?
Given that you've used superglue [which has failed] you now have a problem that unless you deploy some serious cleaning chemistry and/or mechanical treatment your bond becomes:
glass-superglue-[new adhesive]-superglue-glass What can you use to rid the mating faces of contaminating superglue-residue before you try again? |

Re: Adhesive for glass?
My original need is now not relevant, but the general topic is, since repairing cracked glass (in this case a radio dial) is something that many of us have met in the past and may well do so in the future.
At present, I have nothing to add to this thread - but others may have, of course. Al. |
