Yes, but AFAIK Columbia had standardised on 78 by 1930.

Interesting to see "Start Outside" on the label, for recorded plays etc. that where longer than one side broadcasters alternated "Outside Start" and "Inside Start" to make it sound the same when changing disks. The inside is always worse than the outside.

The same applies to dual-layer DVDs.

Presumably for no "hiccup" since digitized stuff should sound the same when reconstituted whatever part of the disc it's recorded in.

Yes, I imagine the DVD situation is to minimise head movement between the end of layer one and the start of layer two. With "groovy" discs this wouldn't apply as it is necessary to move the head out of the way to turn the disc over, so restarting at the same linear speed makes sense to avoid a jump in sound quality.

CDs and DVDs are CLV (constant linear velocity) though (at least, during playback; recording can be done at constant angular velocity, only slowing down if the data buffer is getting emptied faster than it is filling up). They speed up towards the centre, so as to keep the number of bits per metre constant.

I can see why records were CAV, though ..... it would be a nightmare to implement CLV in the mechanical domain!

Absolutely.

Mind you, when you look at the mechanical intricacies of the analogue/mechanical era I am surprised that they did not come up with something!

Just by way of illustration, here's an actual 'Inside Out' broadcast transcription lacquer disc from none other than All India Radio, one of a group that I bought for their interest. They alternate 'Inside Out' and 'Outside In'.

Being 16-inch diameter, it's not straightforward to play, but my Collaro 4T200 transcription unit will just about manage it, thus justifying its description!

If the groove spacing of the record were constant, a constant linear velocity turntable would be fairly simple to design.

Hi Suzy.

If I were you, in the first instance I would email these people:-

https://www.nfsa.gov.au/contact-us/offices

Include a link to this discussion. I have a feeling that they will be very interested.

I am sure they can point you to somewhere in Perth where the record can be safely played and transcribed.

It is possible that this could be an important historical artefact, but even if it isn't a lost episode of "The Goon Show" it may still be worth a bob or two ;-)

Graham.

Hi Graham just a quick up date the nfsa suggest I go to https://www.bl.uk/subjects/sound
Which doesn't really help im in Perth
You wouldn't think it would be this hard to find out about a record with such a historical background ☹️
Thanks again
Suzy
