Default Grundig Yacht Boy 210N - values of capacitors C41 and C44

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me the definitive values of C41 and C44 in a Yacht Boy 210N?

The schematic (https://www.vintageshifi.com/reperto...ice-Manual.pdf) says 5uF, whereas when I test the originals they come out at approx. 10uF. The markings are not clear but they suggest 6.8uF 40WV I think (see attached).

Are the values not too critical so Grundig just popped in 6.8uFs, which over the last 50 years or so have crept up to getting on for 10uF (possibly not helped by being overrated from a voltage POV)?

Many thanks in advance,
Tony

That is 6.8uF. As you suggest, the value isn't critical, and may have been revised during production.

When electrolytics test high, that is usually an indication that they are leaky.

Thanks, Paul. I'll drop in replacements. The radio is in excellent physical condition but its sound is a little distorted so I thought I'd treat it to new electrolytics. Someone in the past has performed a rather clumsy AC adaptor modification unfortunately, but I don't think I'll get involved in reversing that.

Anyhow thanks for your help. I'll post pics when I've finished it.

Check the quiescent current using the service instructions. Quite a lot of these sets seem to have left the factory with the current set to 10% of the correct value, presumably because somebody on the assembly line had their meter set on the wrong range. A giveaway symptom is distortion at low volumes which reduces when you turn the volume up.

And it's done!

A very thorough clean, replaced all electrolytic capacitors and thanks for the tip re adjusting quiescent current. I checked it and sure enough it was way too low.

It's now a fine fine sounding and looking radio!

I replaced the lamp with an LED (adding a resistor) because I could only get a 12V lamp and when I tried fitting it it adversely affected sound quality.

Here are pictures of the finished article!
