Default Identifying model / age Grundig Stereogram (Como E)

Hi,

Help needed for trying to identify model / age of a Grundig Stereogram I've been given, it was heading for the tip.

I've included some pics of the unit and any info I could find on it.
Have been looking online for info, but a bit stumped.

Have not tried plugging it in yet, but it's been in the wars, but I do love the dark veneer finish and size of the unit.

Many thanks

I think you’ll find its from the late 60’s early 70’s.

You can plug it in but before doing so, check the tuning knob to see that it rotates freely and that the pointer moves, if it doesn’t move the pointer, don’t force it, it will need repairing and that’s not for the faint hearted!

The turntable will also require a service, the motors often seize up due to the oil in the bearings drying out.

Please also bear in mind that the turntable motor is wired for 110V, do not connect it directly to the mains.

Good luck with it.

I don't recognise it, but it looks like a late 60s transistor model and would have been pricey when new. It's a pity it's been bashed about. There may be a model number on the tuning scale somewhere.

It's certainly a Como, possibly a Como 6.

[Later] Found it, it's a Como E and uses valves, I think the last Grundig radiogram to do so: https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/grundig_como_est.html

Hi

Radiomuseum.org lists it as 1963/64 export model https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/grundi...egb_cs200.html

You can also get the schematic there.

If the model-identification is correct - be aware that the ELL80 double output-valve is a type renowned for running very hot, so having a short and unhappy life!

Thanks for the fast responses and links, that does appear to be the model.

I've unscrewed the top back panel and looked at the interior, it does use valves and fully matches the web images linked from paulsherwin.

Sadly the pointer does not move with the tuning knob, the arm on the record deck appears broken away from the base. I think this unit got played with over many years, left in the living room of a holiday let.

Will have to see what can be done. Thanks again!

Forgive me, but my first instinct was that this was a late 1960s Transistor unit. I see the back panel label makes reference to a stereo indiciator (suggests an FM Decoder?) and I can't quite see an aperture for the EM87. That's weird - or maybe I am.....

So far as I can make out it's to the left of the MW scale, the FM stereo indicator window is above it, both lie horizontal.

If it helps, I've taken some additional pics on the backboard label and some of the interior.

Thanks

Know these well. Despite their modest audio circuitry and output powers they do sound remarkably good. Worth saving if only for the ECC83 pre-amplifier valve. Be careful with the ELL80 - they are rare and expensive now but usually survive well in Grundig circuitry.

I also note it has the FM Stereo decoder - this is a very rare find for one of these here in the UK as we were well behind the Continent in getting multiplex stereo, and because the decoder cost extra and British pockets are rarely deep, it wasn't usually there. I suppose it is more likely in an "export" model not aimed specifically at the UK - the radio parts of these models often had no Long wave but two short wave bands instead and usually had the suffix "WE" in the model number.

The Philips turntable is a later version of a long running series of models starting with, I think, the AG1015 and including AG1025, 1030 and others. Nice decks but as Michael says the motors (tiny!) often seize up: these will free up with oil and patience. The "automatics" also go very stiff due to the usual grease drying out and turning to glue. The motor voltage is set by the selector on the radio chassis and the motor run at 110 volts, again as Michael says.

Worth saving as it should sound very good. Some models had extra tweeter speakers at the top...
