Mine had a push button.
I am sure I tried to use it to bulk erase various video and audio tapes, and I have a feeling it wasn't totaly satisfactory, but I have forgoten the details.

Tube degaussers would not be powerful enough for tape - conversely a tape bulk eraser could easily damage the shadow mask on a colour tube.
