This is rated at 300Vac, according to the markings on the photo, so should be OK.

No, the rating on the capacitor will almost certainly be 630Vdc, so not the required 1000Vdc.

There is no ac voltage rating visible and no class X or Y markings (ac ratings for mains voltage applications and suitable for direct connection across the mains (phase and neutral - class X) or between mains (phase or neutral) and earth (class Y).

Yes agreed, It is 300VAC rated (spec is max 450AC continuous) the same AC voltage rating as the original old Hunts, important that it is AC rated in this application (phase/tone correction) at the output transformer primary.

It is metallized Polypropylene (MKP) so is good.

It has a max DC continuous voltage rating of 1,500V, so is good, these capacitors in this application are often rated at 1,000VDC.

Technically this Epcos capacitor is a safety suppression capacitor that normally is used connected across mains voltage but is fine to use here.

Note that you will need two service manuals to cover fully this tape recorder:

The electronic part, which is for the specific HMV model 2208 (including casing parts, specifications, electrical adjustments, brief circuit description, circuit diagram , electrical parts layouts and electrical parts list) and

the Thorn DC43 tape deck manual, for the mechanical part (including exploded view diagrams, mechanical parts list, lubrication, mechanical tests and adjustments).

Note that many Thorn group brands/models used this combination of DC43 deck and electronics. The differences between models was cosmetic in the main.

If the original type is still fitted (it might be a brown colour, but with the same markings), it will almost certainly have become more of a resistor.
Hi
Sorry for late question , I work away quite a lot .
Any chance you could source a Capacitor as you mentioned in quote, I don't seem to be able to find one.
Cheers

I recently purchased some 3300pf 300v 20% polypropyline capacitors from Farnell on order code 2478390. I got them with a view to using them in my second TMB272, although I've not started that job yet. These capacitors are a rectangular package with both legs coming out underneath. They are not axial round body style and measure approx 12.5mm x 9mm x 4mm, if that helps.

A bit of information about your tape recorder (HMV brochure dated December 1966 - cost at today's prices - just under £900):

300v AC will really need a 500V+ DC rating.

Axial lead?

The Vishay data sheet says 250Vac max, whereas the original “Hunts” part is 300Vac.

Um, if it's AC rated, where is it located and what's it doing? it may need to have X or Y safety ratings.
