Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
Hi All,
I bought the above record player for my friend for her birthday, I am already a week late with getting it all operational, ive been over everything and it all was working perfectly, auto record drop, return, auto play everything. The only problem was the Left channel wire had corroded off the cartridge, so i ran a new wire from the cartridge and it was working, upon putting the tone arm back, that little peice dropped off, i dont know if there was a spring on it or what, but it goes inside the tone arm with the pin through it, but i dont know what orientation it goes. Just wondering if you could help me at all then i can get it on its way. Thanks - Joe |

If you haven't already got the service sheets for the Garrard 2025, it's available on the web.
Here's a redacted picture just in case it's also available here, but I can't currently check. Hope this helps.

Re: Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
I think ive ruined it... Im so upset the sound was intermitant when playing a record and i think the ancient wires in the tone arm were broken (trapped where the tonearm locks to the deck with the clip when not in use) so i tried to replace all 4 wires, I got the wires really thin ones from a USB cable, ran them to inside where they connect, i came to the cartridge end and i think i have my dads Benign essential tremors, im shaking so badly im only 32... i left the soldering iron on the gartridge pin a bit too long because im shaking and it went soft and started moving... Im so upset, 5 years ago i would have flown through this.
Does anyone have a cartridge for this unit just incase and also possibly the wires? I just want to get it to my friend, was suppposed to be a birthday present. Thanks - Joe |

Re: Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
You NEVER solder wires to the cartridge or solder to the tags if they are pushed on to the cartridge pins...instant destruction. The little push-on tags should be removed and then solder the wires to those. You can use pre-formed cables which means you don't have the fiddly job of soldering the thin wires but in this case I think you will also need a new cartridge.

Re: Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
Yeah i know, i've never ever soldered onto a cartridge before, its a SUPID thing to do..... Rushing due to impatience and not thinking properly.
I will order the wires, run them down the tonearm and route them where the original ones went, tape it out of the way of the start/stop mechanism plug it into this cartridge and test it, if its ruined I will get a new cartridge, but ive held the wires on the cartridge and i can hear the noise through the speakrs when i tap the stylus, which could be a good sign... But if i can find one, I will order one asap. Thanks all - Joe |

One of the very cheap, no-name chinese ceramic cartridges with the red stylus assembly would work in this. You need to pay extra for the mounting clip, or be prepared to improvise.

Re: Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
I dont want to use a no name stylus those red things are horrible I want to try and keep it original as possible, I can clearly see the 2 wires now that have been crushed by the tone arm being clipped into position, I will re do the wires, try this cartridge and prey it works, if not i will have to find one, or a broken garrard turntable or something.
But hopefully after this is done, i will have a fully working stereo "portable" record player again that my friend will enjoy Thanks - Joe |

Re: Elizabethan 20T Stereo and Garrard 2025 Repair
Those red cartridges do vary, they're not all the same. But the best are usually better than most 50 year-old "big name" ceramic cartridges.
