Default Fairchild seventy 07 super 8mm projector portable

Does anyone know anything about these? I bought it on Ebay thinking it would play some Super 8 sound tapes I have but it looks like it requires some form of cassette.

I'm going to take a guess at this one. I reckon what you have is a silent super 8 projector that can be synchronized with an audio cassette recorded on an independent machine and then coupled to the projector. Has it got an audio head for striped films? John.

I don't believe so. There's no way to attach reels, just a recess that takes the film cartridge. From what I can make out, they were popular in the USA and could be fitted into a pay booth to play cartoons and the like.

Does indeed seem to require a cartridge.

Called a Movie Pak Cartridge

Cheers

There is a video here talking about a different projector but shows a good picture of the Fairchild cartridge at around 2:05 on.

Cheers

I remember an American semiconductor firm's rep coming round with one (not sure which firm). That may be how one wound up on this side of the Atlantic.

Fairchild started out as the Fairchild Camera company.

They were being sold off in the UK from an advert in the back of 'Movie Maker'. This must've been around 1980. They were cheap and I nearly succumbed until my father pointed out they needed the special cassette.

Fairchild also made some lovely pickups and the amazing 412-ED turntable that used a valve amp and oscillator to drive the motor - predating the Linn Valhalla etc by 30 years!

Regards,

Paul

I vaguely remember seeing something like this at school. It was in biology class - it showed a short educational film about cells dividing or similar. The film was an endless loop inside the cartridge and it repeated continuously, like the 8-track audio tapes that were once popular.

If this is indeed the same thing, then unfortunately I don't think it will be practical to play your old open-reel home movies on it. They were made for playing short endless loop film cartridges for education or sales presentations. (I believe there were also coin-operated machines using the same principle, which played cartoons or music clips.)
