Here's Agate's obit from the IEE, June 1966:

CHARLTON STAMFORD AGATE
Charlton Stamford Agate, O.B.E., B.SC. (M 1946), died recently at his home in Hampshire, aged 73. Educated at Churcher's College, Petersfield, the University College of Southampton and the Royal College of Science, London, he graduated just before the First World War.

His first appointment was with Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co. He later became research engineer to Electric & Musical Industries Ltd. As general manager and, later, managing director of EMI Design and Development Ltd., he came to be in charge of all the design and development of the EMI group of companies, including the design of much of the top-secret electronic equipment required by the Services in the Second World War; but, nevertheless, it is probable that his most outstanding achievement was the design of the first-ever television receivers used in broadcasting.

One of the most charming and unassuming of men, he loved the open air, and his great hobby was sailing. All who knew him will have liked and admired him, and the present writer regards
himself as fortunate in having enjoyed his friendship. H. F. T.

Cheers,

This only plays for about 7 seconds and then stops, is it me or a fault?

It's not just you. It does the same for me. Also, given that the downloaded file is only about 300KB in length, it would appear to be prematurely truncated - I would expect a video clip that claims to be 3 min. 54 sec. to be somewhat larger than that.

Hi EF80TVVALVE,

If you're really keen to see it, I could try emailing you a saved copy that I have here. It's a whopping 10 MB file though! Let me know.

http://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/19035/

The results are apparently being published in real time, but no sale price showing for that all-important lot, number 1. Did it not meet the reserve, perhaps?

Surprised there's been no comment following my posting of the 9th. Did any forum members attend the auction, or the viewing?

One thing that struck me after seeing the catalogue pictures for the first time is that the casework appears to have deteriorated since the set's appearance on Antiques Roadshow. In particular, there now seems to be a huge chunk of veneer missing towards the bottom left hand corner at the front. I wonder what's happened during the intervening three or four years.

Hello,

What does the letter 'W' mean against Lot 1 (and Lot 2)? 'Withdrawn'?

Hi Michael,

I believe it denotes any large and bulky items where collection is from the warehouse rather than the saleroom, hence the 'W'.

Yes Ian, the "W" does mean that they take it to the warehouse (opposite Television Centre) for later collection.
The results do seem to show that lot 1 was unsold - Hello Laurence (AKA Radiolot), are you out there? What happened?
