Default Ekco ARG134 radiogram: finishing the restoration

I was still continuing to have problems with the original Garrard RC72A, the modification to the pickup arm to accept a more modern ceramic pickup was still beset with the incorrect stylus set down position.

After making a new motor board a BSR UA15 record changer deck was installed. It was painted it brown to give the right appearance, or so I thought. In fact it looked hideous and it didn't work very well either, so let's take another look at the Garrard RC72.

All that was needed was another extension piece added to the pickup arm, one end of this part had to be cut to a specific angle in order that the stylus can be set down on to the lead in grooves of the record.

So now after a modification to the previous modification the record deck works perfectly. After playing a record the pickup arm returns to its correct rest position.

A mains input fuse has been added to protect the mains transformer because no such device was fitted by the manufacturer. Also, because the chassis is mains isolated a three core mains lead replaces the original two core lead, it was in a poor condition anyway.

So at last the restoration job can be signed off.

Finally, just one more job, reduce the hum on the switch position "gram".
It was discovered the leads between the gram sockets and switches were unscreened. Presumably the designers thought they can get away with that because of the original employment of a low impedance pickup, the termination resistor was 47Kohms. Screened leads have now been fitted into the gram circuits and the result is no hum.

And here it is, back at work, a true beauty.
