Default Recycling SCART leads etc.

Just a couple of notes re.. recycling. I have been making the "odd" project recently which needed very thin stranded PVC coloured hook up wire. My local source of components could not help... and the Normal suppliers like CPC and others either...I was about to "junk" a load of SCART leads and SVGA and Ethernet cables..however on close inspection my problems were solved in an instant.
It depends on the manufacturer...... but All my scart leads "21" pin, and other leads, provided me with such a cornucopia of connecting wires to last me....some SCART leads had screened leads as well as unscreened...some had two lots of the full colour spectrum X 2 with the second series with stripes. Even the better scart leads had an outer braid, which will double as earth bonding. Such riches from scrap. Hope this has been useful.

Old Centronics printer leads are also a good source for thin flexible wires.

Pound shop SCART leads are almost worth buying for stripping. They do not have any screened leads in them though.

Handy tip!

Note that some cheap leads seem to use wires whose insulation doesn't survive well when the wires are soldered; they seem to be designed to be crimped.

Those flat, grey ribbon connecting cables used for hooking up hard-drives etc in old PCs are handy too.

Burglar alarm cable also has insulation that melts. You have to solder it fast.

Old Ethernet cables are also a good source of flexible twisted-pair. I used to get lots of these in a previous job where they'd get damaged from having been crushed/traumatized by filing-cabinets/desks/office-chairs-on-wheels.
