Re: Radio Workshops (Now with a poll).
My Hacker Mayflower 2 wasn't fully repaired but that was due to lack of parts. It just needs two new ECL86 valves and should them be fine.
I didn't get a chance to look at my Premier Radio as that needed major surgery. I gave Sean's son the red HMV (after fitting a replacement UY85) and he was working on it with assistance form other members when I left. Did it get sorted by the end of the evening? It's always good to see youngsters taking an interest. It was an excellent day. Thanks to everyone involved. My photos are attached here and in the next few posts. |

Re: Radio Workshops (Now with a poll).
Hi All
Yes, I concur, a thoroughly enjoyable day without too many screams as live chassis's were removed from their cases - all appeared to have been unplugged. Many thanks to Phil, Phil and Rob and anyone else who helped me with my DAC10, R107, AR88D and Philips thing. I was surprised how much space we needed in the end and both Sean and I agree the meeting room would have proved cozy to say the least. The venue in the main hall seemed to work well, although maybe a few more tables would be useful next time, All in all a great day out! I need time to restock, so I'd like at least a week before the next workshop please. Onewatt

Re: Radio Workshops (Now with a poll).
A great day, and a really friendly bunch of like minded people! It was great to put some faces to names, I got loads of help and managed to get lots of repairs done.
I have to admit to the Bang, Sorry, yes, it was my Bush telly! I had snipped the mains filter cap next to the mains dropper and completely missed the one hidden wired across the on/off switch, I mean what a place to put it! Good progress was made with the set though, and it will now show a blurred lop sided raster for a while.. I also (with help) managed to repair an Ekco U122 radio which now sounds much better with the correct tone correction cap fitted A second Ekco, with a tatty case I took as a spares set turned out to have a chassis in much better condition than the outside suggested and after a few checks we found it worked very well, so it has been upgraded to a future refurb rather than a breaker My main success of the day was my Atwater Kent radiogram, the set has had a intermittent low level crackle for years and yesterday It was finally cured! At some time in it's life one of the smoothing capacitors had been replaced, there were two tags on the replacement, one being unused. I thought someone had left off the earth wire and tried earthing the tag, still it crackled, then someone suggested that it may be a two section cap and that I should check if it was marked "can neg". To do this I released the clamp and noticed the clip wasn't that tight, the can was indeed can negative and the un-used section a second cap. After refitting the can, no more crackes! I nearly jumped in the air ! The radio section firmly refused to work in the hall and after a while I put it to one side, the radio had worked Ok at home and couldn't see anything I had done that may have stopped it, so I decided to see what it did back it the cabinet. Sure enough once back in it's box the radio works perfectly, loads of gain on all wavebands !? I was so pleased with it that I have done a youtube recording http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN9JTvVLBh4 When I did the recording I noticed the shadow tuning indicator was not lit, the bulb had gone out a few years back and I cursed myself for forgetting to fix it while the chassis was out. This morning however it came on and is still working perfectly! I think I have a ghost in the machine ! Thanks Sean ! Here's to the next one P.s I think that bottom cover is mine Are you going to Harpenden?

Re: Radio Workshops (Now with a poll).
Hi all,
Just like to add my thanks to everyone who attended this event and thereby making it such an entertaining day. As I normally work alone I found it a bit daunting at first to be in a hall full of like minded people. Strangely I was put off by the noise, as I could not always hear what my radios were doing, but as I got use to the environment it made me wonder what it must of been like in the radio factories in the past. Although I was grateful and fully appreciate the help and generosity of everyone there, special mention must go to Sean and family for arranging it and keeping the refreshments following. Similarly the assistance provided by the experts was invaluable, although perhaps next time we could fix the kit with them watching rather than the other way round Sean - I'm not sure I can say I repaired anything but I did find faults and now know what to do next which is what I'd hope to achieve. Progress with the set were:- Ferguson 325 - Arrived dead, with the help of Steve-p and hot bulb now working but needs new waxies and switch cleaning. Ferguson 384 - I had never power this up but with the help of paul, who found the offending broken wire now works on MW and LW but the FM needs more attention. Bush DAC90a - Brought as a "scrap" set this turned out to be in very original order "just as it left Mr Bush" was the comment from hotbulb, the only physical damage being to the suppressor cap which although there had only one wire instead of the usual two going to it. It made a interesting comparison to the bodged unit on show. Although mine worked it was not very lively and will need new caps. Finally the Marconiphone T11DA - this came out late in the day and when powered up showed signs of life, however it will require dismantling before more investigations can be carried out. Finally I must thank slidertogrid for his explosive input into the day - I'm sure my adrenalin rush will calm down in a day or two TJY

Re: Radio Workshops (Now with a poll).
Hi Paul,
I believe time conspired against a completed repair, Callum had replaced a dodgy electrolitic that stopped the screaming and was in the process of changing another couple of capacitors when packing up time arrived. He promised to bring it to the next workshop completed ! Phil (The one scratching his head over Hallicrafters alignment most of the day) |

Hi Paul,
All being well we will complete the HMV on Friday - Callum has been nagging me about it since the workshop! It will be done! Sean
