Dave, i thick you are right about disc on needle coming a drift because i have seen the paint on the needle around that area to be very flaky probably happens
when overloaded,
Also the rectifier looks to be of a later type, as you say probably a marriage.

I would like to add my Avo to the on-line database that Jeremy has set up. Can a seasoned hand tell me where to look for the serial number and how I might work out what Mk it is?

Thanks, Clive

It's the first of the Model 8's. (Sometimes called the MkI now but only because later versions followed.)

The bottom of the white printed scale plate, towards the RHS, will usually have the serial number. You have to peer down into the interior slightly.

I've just come into a large collection of ex military Avos, all in the NATO green cases. Ranging from model 9x, 7x, the panlicmatic version of the model 8 (test set no.1).

Plus a few more other goodies. The car and the garage is absolutely stuffed full of them. I don't know what I'll do with them, but a good clean up will be a start.

Hi Sinewave,

Excellent, I guess you were the Winner of that Auction on Tuesday?
Very unusual to see so many AVO's in one Lot.

In my humble opinion (Hopefully not upsetting anybody), the 9sx was the best of the full sized AVO's.

Could you post the Serial Numbers?
In particular the 9sx ' s.

Would also be interested in further details of the 9sx with regards to
not only the Dates, but whether the 9sx ID is Stamped on the Front,
Pan-Climatic indication and the Scaleplate Type (See post 1451).

I identified at least Two different types of 9sx, but since you have so many
in one place, it might be possible to expand on this and work out when they changed, or even if there are more differences.

I'm trying to expand the Database a little for particular Models that have
known differences within Mk's. Mk IV's and 9sx especially, but not exclusively.

Thanks in advance

Ian

Yes that's the one Superscope.

I took a chance and luckily it was well worth it, there are a lot of very nice meters there and most are in good calibration.

I've got lots of serials to post, of this lot and others.

I'm not always lucky though, recently My Hermes have lost a very rare DC only Avometer, the model 3. I cringed when the seller said it was going via My Hermes and now, no one knows where the parcel is.

I've also just rehomed an Avo DA211. It's in front of me right now, serial is 21102249.

That was certainly a large pile of meters, i'm glad they didn't go to a drill bandit. Mind they don't walk, some people will steal anything!

I need to negotiate a precision avometer coming in from the cold, in exchange for putting up some shelves here and there. I can't justify keeping a laboratory grade instrument in the shed for ever, even if it is technically obsolete.

Sinewave,

Forgot to mention, there are at least Two different types of Military
Soft Green/Grey Vinyl Cases in existence.
Both carry the same NATO Stock Number (6625-99-105-7056).

They look the same with a casual glance, but the more common one
has the Two Metal Rotating latches at the bottom and Two Strap/Buckles
at the Top.
The less common one has Two Metal Rotating latches replacing the Strap/Buckles. So it has Four Latches in Total.

I have very limited Data to go by, but it looks like the Less Common version
was supplied with the 9sx around 1972.

Of course Cases and Meters can and will have been swapped around a bit,
but if you happen to have any of the Rarer Types, could you possibly take
a Note of the Date of the Meter?
Might help to confirm when these were supplied.

Regarding the DA211, is there any way of dating it?

Dave,

I hope you have a Dry Shed?
Unlike mine which sprang a Leak in the Torrential Rain this week!
Fortunately, none of my AVO's are outside the House, (Yet)!
But then my collection is quite small compared to you Guys.

Tolerably dry Ian, (we just had that rain belt you mention, an hour ago) but having seen inside the 'PAM' it is built to aircraft standards in some respects (and relies on the operator to calculate temperature error!) so in addition to relative rarity this sways me to bring it in.

Yep, none of these are going to be spoken of in the same sentence as 'steampunk', or be repurposed into a table lamp.

Quite a few of these cases are indeed the ones with twist locks instead of buckles, which I really like.

I'll make a list of them as I acquired them. I intend on swapping out cases as these cases with four twist locks are the ones I'll be keeping.

Not sure of the date of my Da211, it doesn't appear to be apparent.

I have got a rigid black carry case with another NATO stock number on it.
There is little chance of it having been shipped with either of my 9 Mk4s as they have the name of a civilian company on them however one was in the case when I acquired them.

That case would usually be from the military version of the model 8 mark 6.

Refugee,

The Case you have there, would originally have had the NATO version of the Model 8 Mk VI. I don't have the NATO Number yet for that Model of Meter.
The Last as far as I know of the Military/NATO Test Sets.
The others are:

Test Set Multirange No1 (Model 9 SX)
Nato Stock Number for Case 6625-99-105-7056
Nato Stock Number for 9sx 6625-99-105-7050 (Earlier Models 1960's 12889 ˄ 5QP/17447)
Came in the Soft Vinyl Grey/Green Case of which there are at least Two versions.

Multimeter Set No1 Mk 2 (Model 8 Mk V)
Nato Stock Number for Case, Not sure, haven't seen one, but might be 6625-99-105-7049.
But don't quote me on that yet.
Nato Stock Number for Meter Unknown at this time.

Multimeter Set No1 Mk 3 (Model 8 Mk V)
Nato Stock Number for Case 6625-99-650-2822
Nato Stock Number for Meter 6625-99-650-2823

I have no idea at this stage, what the difference is between the Mk 2 and Mk 3 Test Sets.
I know they were both Model 8 Mk V's as this is stated in different Mk V Manuals.
Note also, the change in Test Set Name.

That confirms that the case is newer than the meter as I originally thought.

I have 6 (6 that I can think of, wouldn't be surprised if there are more tucked away somewhere) of the NATO version of the Model 8 Mk6.

Test set No1 Mk4, NATO stock number 6625-99-722-8684.

There may possibly have been a later test set No1 because the number on the case I have is numerically higher

6625-99-728-5965.
