Good grief! I didn't expect it to be that close of a match, it looks like the same stuff. I'm sure I've seen that on a number of different Ekco's from the 30's.

Keep an eye out for a smashed up Ekco with good grille cloth!

Regards,
Lloyd

I think this is about the nearest you find supplied by Sid Chaplin. Mick

I've used Sid Chaplin's grille cloth to replace some on an AC86, and an AC76. Very good cloth!

Hi All,

So I have finished the first sanding of the case now. If you compare with some of the first photos, its already looking infinitely better. But there is a lot of fine detail still which needs to be prepared before I apply my first coat of finish.
I will take the advice and practice on several other bids of sanded veneered wood first.
I bought a tin of French Polish which says "contains only pure natural shellac". I also got a tin of natural wood dye to mix with the french polish to use on the base.
Just to say that I am more than confident with my skills in chassis repair, wood preparation, grille clothe selection and to tackle the fretwork repair.
I do however appreciate all comments and especially on the wood finishing where I'm not that practiced. So thanks for the comments to date and steering me away from an oil based finish.

Hi Vinrads,
Thanks for the Sidney's email.
I'll get in touch to see if its a better match than what I do have.
Your speakers/radios look great.

What a wonderful restoration project.

It is something I would like to do myself, but I doubt I have the requisite skills (or stocks of spares) to do this. I've got several transistor sets working but nothing on this scale.

But it is great just to see the masters at work

Looking at progress so far I think this is going to be a wonderful set.

Hi All,
Below is the picture of the escutcheon.
I need to find somewhere to re-plate the brass? coating.
Its looking a little worse for wear now, but should come up great.
Do people think this would be a brass coating. This seems to me to be the most appropriate plating material.

Is it not solid brass, I wonder?

Hi Nick,
Its not solid brass but rather thin steel plate with a coating of brass over the top which has been substantially removed by some over zealous cleaning, it seems to me. If I look carefully I can see the fine scratch marks.
I would expect a newly coated escutcheon to look too bright, but after a while it should dull to a more appropriate look.

A lot of door furniture of this era had a browny "antique bronzed" type of finish. Same for fittings on wardrobes etc.

Nick.
