Update, here's a couple of photos, one full length & the other a close up by the meter. Note the operation knob has a black plastic frame instead of white.

Isn't "BA" the code for the Croydon factory? All the Philips UK made TVs (mono and colour) that I have ever encountered had the BA prefix in their serial numbers. When the Pye Lowestoft TV factory started to make PHilips designed sets (e.g. G11 and TX), their factory code was "HU".

I had an idea but wasn't certain but now I'm sure, all I've got to do now is to keep and eye out for it as it did appear for sale some months ago but I forgot to bid on it. GRRRR!

Are "BA" and "BY" both codes for the Croydon factory? Or was "BY" somewhere else?

It's a shame, but a few years ago i could pop in to their office in Croydon as it's about 5 mins up the road but it's flats now

Didn't realise they had a factory down the Purley Way. You learn something new everyday.

BA was the Croydon factory code applied to complete products and BY was used to identify production changes, such as the label applied to individual plug-in modules in their G8 colour TV chassis (designed and made by Croydon).

Hello Camtechman,

I have a Croydon made EL3300 or it might be an EL3301 (will have to check). Would you like me to take and post some close-up pictures?

In particular, the type/serial number/ratings label, the controls/meter escutcheon and the innards with the bottom cover off.

Regards,

Dazzlevsion

Here are some photos of my Philips EL3301G/15 unit, which was made in England, at the Philips Croydon factory. Note the "BA" prefix to the serial number and production info labels (and the labels both have edges like gummed postage stamps, which seems unique to Philips UK produced equipment). Made in 1966.

I used to have a list of factory codes....it's on a CD somewhere. I'll try and find them. It was one of the things I got from the Croydon office before it closed in 2004 and we were made redundant.

Oh yes. I used to work at the Waddon workshop which was further down firstly when it was CES and latterly Philips Service.

Sideband,

If you can find them, they'll be helpful and if anyone sees an English one for sale, please send me a PM.

Thanks all

Tony

I suspect it means Great Britain, as when Philips tape recorder production moved from Holland to Austria (Vienna), the suffix letter was A.

I always thought the /15 suffix meant that?

Hello Bill,

I think the /15 or /05 suffix means "version for the UK market", not necessarily made in the UK.

For example, an analogue Philips TV destined for the UK market, designated with a /05 or 15 suffix, would have a 6MHz intercarrier sound IF strip and IFs of 39.5 and 33.5 MHz, rather than the CCIR standard for most of Western Europe of 38.9 and 33.4MHz (giving 5.5MHz inter carrier sound).

There's a Philips L3G23T on richardsradios.co.uk with the serial number BY608506, so the "BY" prefix was sometimes applied to complete products and not just sub-assemblies.
