Default Spotted on holiday

Saw this sign while on holiday in Tenerife. The shop it's attached to now has nothing to do with radios at all, but the sign itself is in really good condition, being made of ceramic tiles. Anyone seen one like this before, or got an idea of the date of an advertisement like this?

Admins: please feel free to move, if I've placed this on the wrong part of the site.

Until about 6 years ago there was a (1976 era) CRT shaped 'Philips Colour Tv' sign with the red, green and blue blocks below it in a village I know over here. No idea what happened to it sadly, the shop closed down.

Those out of date adverts painted onto the sides of buildings are known as "ghost signs".

Hello,

I've just returned from a holiday in Norway and came across some lovely radios in various locations (mainly Tandberg and Radionette, as you might expect). Here is one, a splendid Tandberg radiogram. It is a Huldra 5 (a Huldra being a Norse mythology creature - a young woman with a cow's tail!).

Unfortunately, I couldn't look into the record player compartment, as it was locked (and the handle removed, as you can see in the picture). It certainly is a lovely piece of woodwork and doubtless worked very well indeed.

Regards,

Hello,

These were either exhibits in museums or on display (but not for sale) in shops (or in one case a private house's front window!).

Lovely country!

Should any one be on holiday or just visiting the Nice area in the South of France, there is a Monday market in Nice and where there are often very old radios for sale together with other interesting bits of test gear. When you have a look at the wiring etc its amazing that more people weren't electrocuted. the market have many things of interest to all the family, not just the dads.

Tandberg made some gorgeous stuff. I fixed a Huldra tuner amp once for our family GP (unbelievably one Dr H R Finlay, an Aberdonian transplanted to Yorkshire) and the quality of the thing was most impressive. Pretty rare in Britain.

I think the Hulder were mythological people with cow's tails and magical powers, while Huldra was one specific individual. I looked it up in an encyclopaedia when I came across the strange name but it was 40+ years ago.

They do now, but I had to do it the hard way back then. Odd thing to name radios after.
