When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
I ask as there is someone who is selling a quantity of them as “manufacturer refurbished” seems to have a quantity of 28” and 32” widescreen Sanyo CRT TVs and I am considering one for the back room.
Is there a way to tell the age of the set from a model number? The 28” appears to be 28FWN6HB from what I can make out in the photographs. I can’t see a model number for the 32” sets. |

Re: When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
There is a listing on Amazon, currently unavailable, which makes sense for a 28FWN-6, date first available Jan 2005.
Can’t be sure its exactly the same TV.

Could well be. I found that, but thought there was something more specific. May be buried in another thread.

I think most tube manufacturing stopped between 2006 and 2008. I think by 2008/2009 the market share in Europe was mostly non-existant. Maybe the EU would have documented this?

Well Sanyo shut their uk factory in 2009 and the whole site was demolished a few years later so I don’t think they can be manufacturer refurbished. Probably some unsold stock someone has found.

I have a feeling that novelty portables themed around kids films or cartoons (Disney, Pixar etc) would've lasted for a bit longer, 2006 or 7.

Who looses a warehouse full of TVs for 15 years?
I am tempted to treat myself to one though. Have to have a chat with SWMBO this afternoon. |

Re: When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
Like anything, depends on price. Used WS TV sets have practically no value due to their size and weight and the fashion for flat screens.

While these portables turn up at the usual places for sale, I remember there seemed to be a batch of them on eBay being sold individually quite cheaply by the same seller a year or two ago.

Re: When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
I found out Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) produced picture tubes up to at least 2004 in the UK, so there was still demand for (smaller) tubes by UK/Continental setmakers by then.
I think LG-Philips Displays (LPD) ceased manufacturing tubes in 2006 after which they only produced some CRT parts in the UK up to 2008. |

Re: When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
How strange! I suppose they were in a massive warehouse and forgotten about. Possibly catalougue overstocks that missed the audit? I wonder if the same warehouse has any pre-war sets or early dual standard colours in there...probably not!

By the early 2000s Tatung had given up making CRT TV sets, simply marketing sets made by Profilo-Telra. Gave up on CRT sets in 2006. Seems that 2006 was the end year for CRT televisions, Currys PC World stopped selling CRT sets in 2006. Last gasp for CRT television was the Samsung "Slimfit" 32" TV set. Was asked to look at one earlier this year. Thankfully, it's owner decided not to have this 55Kg monster repaired. Not into carrying heavy objects anymore. At 399mm (16") the set was not that slim and the public were not at all convinced it was slim either. DFWB. Last edited by FERNSEH; 28th Nov 2020 at 11:44 am. Reason: Fixed quote |

Re: When were the last CRT sets available in UK?
Ah the Slimfit.
A very heavy set, it was available as an HD version. Sad thing was the resolution at the extremes of the screen. They had a 130 degree deflection angle so the aperture grille had to be angled for even light distribution and compensate for beam distortion thus the reduced definition at extremes. The line stage gave trouble too. Very few lasted more than seven or eight years. I had one, it was OK but could never get close to a modern LED screen or 4k.

I believe LG were going to put a slim CRT set into production. Perhaps they did in other markets.

When a company goes bust or a sole trader dies, it is surprisingly easy for warehouses to be sold, complete with contents, by public auction. The purchaser might not clear it for years. I know of someone who purchased a lock up store, complete with contents. It was formerly owned by a now bankrupt hotel. Most of the contents were worthless, but a few items were saleable or useful, no TVs in this case. |
