Default Telefunken Concertino 8.

Hello,

i have a 1958 radio , a Concertina from Telefunken. But no user guide.
It seems that the volume button does not work.

I would like to fix this.

Thanks.

Pierre

First, please excuse me writing back to you in English. By all means use Google translate.

Whilst I am sure at the end of the day we can sort out just which spelling Telefunken used for this model, the problem you have is no sound.

To help you here, there are a few checks to be made to find out why.

The first is, with the back cover off, can you see if the valves are lit up? You are looking for a dull orange glow inside the glass, these are the valves heaters and best seen at the bottom of the glass envelope. If they do, then the mains voltage is getting to the mains transformer.

This transformer does 2 things. It reduces the mains voltage, usually, 240volts AC to 6.3 volts to power the heaters and secondly, provides the right voltage to the circuit which creates the high voltage, generally, 250 volts DC also needed to make the radio work.

If the valves heaters are glowing, does the "magic eye" tuning indicator at the front of the radio glow green. If it does, then the 250 volts DC circuit is working.

Should the valves not light or the magic eye not glow then you will need to do some fault finding.

The fault could be as simple as a fuse that requires replacement or a valve.

May I ask you to attach a photo of the radio or give the model number shown on the back card cover.

Also, a brief explanation of when the radio was last working and did it just stop or is this a radio you have just purchased.

Something else, do you have any experience in working on a radio and do you have a test meter if we need to measure for say a faulty fuse.

Well first all of all, sorry for my first answer that was totally dumb; second, thank for all the answers, specially the last one which is quite accurate.

I am no technical specialist, so not sure I understand all you said. Best thing (like with IT), just try, and see if it works! Well, I am going to open wide the "machine" and check.

The fact is that I am moving very soon, so the radio is wrapped up, and I can not even see the real name (a or o in the end?). While organizing the move, I just discovered that old radio in the basement, so beautiful, and it works! With a nice warm sound. except I cannot change the volume.

Next week is my real move. I promise I'll try again with all your precious advices!

PS: I am always astonished with the "specialized" forums to see so many people involved and competent.

Thanks.

Bonjour Pierre!

Help, although my son lives in Vienna, his wife, her family and friends speak perfect English so German Dalek, apologies for replying to you in English.

This is a very kind offer and I imagine, depending on where Pierre is moving to, he will let you know if he can take this up.

One thing, in his last post but one there was a correction, he said that the radio worked BUT he couldn't change the volume up or down.

This could be just a shot of a switch-cleaner to make the control wiper make contact with the track (if only so easy) or a new volume control needed.

If the latter, the exact Telefunken model will be required which is promised.

Hi Chris, thanks!
I could imagine, that the rest of the radio is not up to date.
So if it is "still" working over the years, it will need "soon" a
complete re-capping.
Because Pierre is new to this hobby, he has to know, that he
has to count on more problems when using it in the future.

Regards,
German Dalek

Bonjour Jérôme

Many thanks for listing the site DOCTSF.

This one is new to me and illustrates just how prolific radio and television design and manufacture was in continental Europe. It was, as I am sure you know, the same here.

Wireless World from 1935 onwards detailed radio television development in the UK, with many photo's of the models on offer; a 1937 edition reviewed the German Radio Exhibition again in 1955 & last in 1965, the imported set review of that year also highlighting the competition which British Manufacturers faced.

We were so lucky to have the partnership of Philips Eindhoven with Mullard who together created the foundation for much of UK development, notwithstanding of course GEC Research Laboratories, who in 1951 showed off their germanium crystal triode radio!!

Chris

Hello,

i'm back.
I tried to use the radio, but now, i have no sound at all. I opened it to get pictures. Here they are.
I tried to get FM, with no luck. No sound at all.
I looked at the fuse on the right. It seems empty.
And there is that "stick" on the third picture. which is not fixed at all, but was laying inside the radio.
There is orange glowing on the tubes, some strong, some weak.
And on the front, there is the green signal, but it does not change while i am turning the FM button on right or left.

Several posts deleted now that the radio model has been positively identified from photographs as a Concertino 8.

The "stick" is the ferrite rod antenna for LW and MW (GO et PO).

It would seem that the set has suffered some damage whilst being moved!

The "stick" would normally be mounted on a support, sometimes a rotatable one to adjust for best signal (the ferrite rod antenna is directional with a null if the rod is end on pointing at the transmitter). If the connections to it are still OK, it can simply be fixed back where it should be, otherwise it's time for the soldering iron!

Hello,

i found out where the ferrite should be installed. I did it, but
I can not get Petites Ondes or Grandes Ondes.
FM no longer works too. Before the move, it worked, but i could not change the volume. Now, i do not get any frequency.
Still cleaning it . But i am pessimist.

I will let you knowif it is getting better.

Message to Dalek: i am no longer in Paris, but in the South West, near Bordeaux. Sorry.

Good news. I moved just a little the radioset (90 dégrees).
I can get FM, but very low. And can not change the volume.
PO/GO still not working.

Check that none of the wires leading to the ferrite rod aerial are broken. That's what generally happens when a ferrite rod aerial gets dislodged.

Also check that the rod itself isn't broken.

You can test the audio section of this radio by connecting a signal to the phono pickup in the back. Depress the TONBD-TA key next to the AUS key on the front. This selects the signal from the back. For a test signal just use your finger - it will feed a 50 Hz signal through the audio section. Check if you can control the loudness with the volume control. Note: There are two inputs on the back. This is the one on the left that has a picture of a phonograph. And this input has two sockets - the socket on the left is ground - do not use this one. Use the socket on the right. A little bare wire like a paper clip works just fine.

Hello,
i tried the previous advise. I could not hear any sound by using the right socket.
But using the left, i heard some weak scratch sound.
For what it worth.
