Memorable vintage electronics advertising.
I've aklways been fascinated by the marketing techniques used to promote the sales of electronic consumer-goods.
I wonder what your memorable advertising tag-lines are. For me,; "You can Rely on Pye" has a nice solid sentiment to it. The Harry Worth ads for "Civic" radio/appliance stores, with him doing his splits-reflected-in-the-shop-window thing ant then the conga were a bit downmarket. Andre Previn's quietly-assured opinion that "These Fergusons give probably the best picture of all time" struck home to the middle-class TV-buyer in the 1980s. And the ads for Ariston washing-machines/tumble-driers/dishwashers featuring a rework of the "Da Da Da" song by German band Trio [which most 1980s-kids would recognise because it was also used as a loader theme for a bunch of computer-games - including the beepy-boopy sound of a Casiotone VL1-1] was also brilliantly-placed. Ariston.. and on... and on... and on... and on... and Ariston. There wqs also a fascinating series of Hotpoint "Aqualtis" washing-machine ads in the 90s that themed the insides of a washing-machine as an aquarium with bras and socks taking the role of various sea-creatures. What are your favourite ad taglines/catchphrases/themes? |

Hitachi: "The quality goes in before the name goes on." Spoken by an actor who was in Hi-De-Hi. I think.
I must admit, I always doubted André Previn's credentials in that advert. Why not ask a TV engineer? Tape cassettes: "Me ears are alight!" Memorex? |

"You can Rely on Pye"
That strap line ran for several years. I think it first appeared soon after Philips rescued the verging-on-bankrupt Pye/Ekco group in 1967. I remember an ad in a daily newspaper “We supply the national TV networks with 70% of their colour transmitters. You can rely on Pye.” (around 1970, during the colour TV boom years). |

Re: Memorable vintage advertising.
Have you noticed that the older adverts always included the name of the product in the jingle or catch phrase? These days that is rare. We play 'what the heck is this advertising' during the boring bit between the programs.

Re: Memorable vintage advertising.
In the 1980s Frank Muir advertised lawnmowers with the slogan 'why slowmow when you can Flymo'
The makers of a cylinder mower that had a grassbox ( so collecting the cuttings unlike the Flymo) responded with an advert whose slogan was 'its a lot less bovver than a hover '. |

Re: Memorable vintage advertising.
In an illustrated interview with Mr Previn (after his Ferguson promotion) his Hitachi TV could be clearly seen in the corner of the room - something not lost on the manufacturer!

Re: Memorable vintage advertising.
I laughed out loud at that!
I remember John Cleese: ‘There’s a nice little Sony’ and whenever I see a tangle of cables at the rear of various boxes I still refer to it as spaghetti. (And from that I began to refer to the flat connector ribbons between computer boards as lasagne.) Maxell ‘Storm in a tea cup’ (Mussorgski: Night on a bare mountain) is one of my favourites. ‘Break the sound barrier’ was clever strapline. I can't think of a particularly memorable campaign recently but as far as TV is concerned I watch little, and the advertising has become so intrusive and repetitive and often takes up 15-20 mins of any hour that programmes I do want to watch on commercial channels I record so that I can fast-forward the ads.
