Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
Hi everyone,
Well I quickly fixed up my Invicta T102B to watch the Queen on. A couple of years ago I fired the set up only to find that the tube's emission had dropped off a cliff. This year I decided to see what was up. On Christmas Eve I took the chassis out and found that the CRT pins were very tarnished. After polishing them with Tcut original, the CRT heater was much brighter and the set was now ready for Christmas day. More to follow.

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
Hi all,
The final part of my post here. The Invicta T102B performed really well on Christmas day. I was using a Domino converter for the first time (I recently obtained it by swapping a Hedhog with a fellow collector). It is a very sensitive set. Even with 12dB of attenuation, the CRT was still over saturated. The Domino definitely gives out a lot more RF than the Aurora. BTW, I'm still suspicious of the CRT socket, it is a little wobbly on the pins. I have just found a NOS socket to fit on, but I didn't have it to hand on Christmas eve unfortunately. Cheers Andy

I think you should forward a copy of the second picture to the Queen with a covering letter explaining how you produced it on the 1946 Pye/Invicta. I think the Queen would be very amused. John.

Hi.
I think Her Majesty would be very pleased to see everyone's contribution to this thread. YouTube must be wondering why there are so many uploads of the Queens Speech on old tellys! There are copyright issues but I've received a message to say there won't be any further action required so all must be OK. I've had problems in the past so the videos were removed.

Ah, well, if had had any thought that the pictures would be shown to royalty, then maybe I would have at least covered the naked chassis with a surgical gown 😁

That would not bother the Queen. HM used to drive and repair lorries during WW2. John.

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
Seeing the BBC figure of how many millions were reckoned to watch the speech, there cannot be enough functioning vintage TVs for them all to watch it on, and maybe the standards converters needed are in even shorter supply.
Can't say I'm too bothered who watches what, and what on. I care that they have the freedom to choose, but what that choice is hasn't got much importance outside their immediate circle. Maybe all those people wanting 50s, 60s, 70s fixing 'as a favour' worked as aversion therapy? David

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
If you can face another 10 minutes here's what the Queen looked like on a Sony 9-90 running 405 lines.
Whilst my HMV901 was connected to the Aurora RF output I also connected the Aurora 405 line video output to a Panasonic NV-FS90. The 9-90 isn't renowned for its DC handling but it's better on UHF so you'll see that both buttons are pressed in selecting 405 UHF mode and it's connected to the FS90 aerial output. So the 9-90 is displaying the replay of the 405 line VHS tape. Peter |

Nice one! Cracking picture. We may have had the least number of lines in the World but we certainly received excellent pictures. John

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
I haven't checked what bandwidth the FS90 gives on 625 lines but if it was 2MHz then I suppose it should be able to resolve 3MHz on 405 lines. I just tried it and it certainly does manage 2.5MHz although 3MHz is rather well down.

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
Hi.
Most good VCRs will manage 2.8mhz on 405 lines. Your clip is really good and I personally wish I had a decent camera that didn't band on videos. I've three, a Fugi with a focus motor fault, a Canon and the Huawei P30 lite that although is a spectacular camera the shutter is not adjustable, I'd need to upgrade to a Pro for that but there is no chance of that.

Re: TV to watch Queen's Christmas Speech on?
Hi Trevor, My video camera is rather less than desirable. All the menu setting is via the touch screen. Unfortunately the touch screen has lost line sync so if I want to change anything I need to look in the viewfinder and try to guess where to touch the touch screen. It also has rather noisy and poor low light performance.
Your 2.8MHz figure is probably about right for mine because the 2.5MHz grating is full strength and the 3MHz is only just perceptable. I think the banding (aliasing) is less if you don't fill the video frame with the full television screen image. Peter Last edited by peter_scott; 29th Dec 2021 at 2:36 pm. |
