Converting a Portuguese AEP 332 Telphone - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

I'd appreciate advice on converting a Portuguese AEP 332 Telphone to plug and socket (I appreciate that it will all change to VOIP shortly, but hey-ho!).

I recently received it in what appears to be a partly converted state, with a standard plug and socket line cord, curly plastic handset cord, and terminal wiring connections that do not conform to the basic original wiring diagram under the baseplate - Diagram No C110020, which does not depict the inetrnal bellset that is fitted to the phone.

As received, the internal bells did not ring. Even after consulting Bob Freshwater's most excellent Telephone File, and receiving some helpful bespoke advice from him, I've not been able to find a wiring diagam that gives the proper configuration.

After circuit tracing, and trial and error, I have found that the following configuration allows the bells to ring, the phone to send and receive voice correctly, and to connect and disconnect from the exchange seemingly correctly.

However, to do this, I have had to include the ringing capacitor in the circuit, despite advice on this form, in 2013, that that item should not be used for the phone and socket circuit (Station X, 22nd Mar 2013, 11:37 am)

The configuration I have is:
T1 - White Line In
T1 - T2 connected with a 3.3Kohm resistor
T8 - T9 strapped together
T9 - Red Line in
T10 - Blue Line in
T10 - T11 - T12 strapped together

I don't have a Rectifier No. 205 inserted between T6 & T5, to reduce acoustic shock, and need to source one.

I would appreciate any thoughts and advice as to whether this configuration is correct; where I can source the appropriate diagram for this Portuguese model, incorporating an internal bell set; and where to source the Rectifier.

The connections you describe look pretty much like those for a GPO 332 (see N432), except that, if the internal capacitor is being used, the blue wire should not be connected to the circuit. Either that or try keeping the blue wire (if it is connected to the ringing capacitor in the master socket) and removing the strap between T10 and T11.

OK, thank you Dave, I can try that tomorrow, but it means that only red and white are connected.

Correct. That's all you need when not using an external capacitor.
