spotted an article in the latest EPE magazine, describing an RGB to YUV adaptor, with added on synch. I's a nice simple device, and may be of interest to FOTH experimenters (especially the fact that one output is effectivly RGB combined to give a monochrome luminance signal).

unfortunatly not, we had a copy at work, which is where I saw it, but as it is the current issue, I can't scan it, the best I can do is this:

Without the sync or any other bits, RGB to YUV is just a matter of maths and resistors.

Reverse of a TV with RGB drive.

you're quite correct, but this is a simple, publshed design, which will give composite video from RGB, and includes a modification to add synch.

I'm holding it up as a basis for further experimentation, especially considering earlier discussions about using op-amp combiners with the FOTH project.

Hi,

Just picked up a copy of EPE today and got a feeling of deja-vu; the device described therein is this one which I'd found online earlier in the year.

Strangely I'd managed to read the full article on-line free a few months ago, now it seems to want money...

It's one I'd considered basing something on; partly what's needed for FotH TV is an RGB to Y/Cr/Cb converter with the Cr/Cb bits missing.

It still needs H + V sync combining correctly then adding to the Y, though. I might managed to get back into this next year if other things stop getting in the way.

A lot of the more popular Silicon Chip projects end up as kitsets from Dick Smith or Jaycar eventually - unfortunately it doesn't look like this one has (yet) but its worthwhile keeping an eye out in case it does.

Have just boudgt the mag - Im not too sure if this will be much use, but might have a go at it anyway..... (it is much neater than the one I am building....)

There is an even cheaper route to converting RGB to YUV for feeding converters and the like: most half decent DVD players and recorders have component out. Just make sure in the menu the output is set up for interlace rather than progressive. I used the Y output successfulyfor my Aurora from a Panasonic DVD recorder which in turn was connected to a DTT box by RGB scart.

I'm not sure a 625-line DVD recorder would cope too well converting 405-line, 819-line (or anything else) RGB to component, though - which is what we're attempting to do.

Just to clarify, the FotH TV system outputs DVD, off-air TV, timeshifted hard disk recordings or whatever as 405-line (or 819-line, 240-line, 441-line etc.) 0.7V p-p RGB video plus separate TTL-level horizontal and vertical sync. This needs combining to feed a modulator - no conversion, it's already the right standard but it's RGB.

The EPE circuit does some of what's needed (and isn't standard specific); I think it's a good basis for further experimentation.
