I recorded a few pick of the pops, but didn’t pause when he spoke, I’ll try and digitise the tapes.

Great ! Yes, with hindsight these are really the best part. The chart rundown at the end was always done live and it's sometimes apparent that it's become a battle to fit all the chart in before the music runs out !!

I worked with another master of the genre, Brian Matthew, and the secret of his success was meticulous scripting - and then delivering it as if it wasn't scripted at all!

The person next to Alan Freeman is if I remember correctly Denis Jones who was the producer of Pick of the Pops and Desert Island Discs. I went to school with his son and well remember his huge record collection taking up the multiple walls in the living room, the dining room and the hall way of the house floor to ceiling and when any were played it was on a portable HMV record player!

Hello,

I do like hearing these shows on ‘discovered’ tapes…

I clearly remember hearing the tracks I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Marvin Gaye and Israelites, Desmond Dekker for the first time on a tape that came with an early 60s Grundig TK14 reel to reel tape recorder which my uncle gave me back in 1974. My elder Cousin had used this tape to record the radio back in the late 60’s.

Terry.

'always looking for good quality recordings' ?

Was TotP transmitted on VHF in the 60's and early 70's? Only recordings I have from early 70's are on cassette.

I now can't remember the dates when the various DJ's used to do TotP, but lots from the pirate ships after 1967 or course.

TOTP was a TV programme. Given that 405 line TV signals were still being transmitted in the 1960's you could say it was transmitted on VHF.

Did you mean POTP which was broadcast on VHF FM radio?

The radio version at 5pm on a Sunday, so must be POTP, didn't have a TV then.

Was POTP on VHF in the 60's?

Yes. BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 2 both broadcast POTP. The former on MW the latter on VHF FM.

I remember the days of taping PotP on a little shoe-box type monoknob cassette recorder. Nowhere near HiFi but OK for playing in the car.

Biggest problem was getting the timing right, a mistake here could leave you with catastrophic accordion-and-banjo trauma from inadvertently hearing Sing Something Simple!!

I’d be interested in this tape, or a copy of it, I’m one of the digitisers from the Terry O’Brien Facebook group. I’ve been lucky enough to find a fair few pic of the pops reels over the years from different job lots. I’m always happy to digitise any as well, and any John Peel recordings too. I can do reels of any size and format, and cassettes too.

Hi
I'm hoping to re-record this tape again. Unfortunately right now I'm very busy but a couple of health issues is coming in the way.
I'd ask the moderators to please keep this thread open. I promise to re record the tape and update here, give me a few weeks though.

It would make very good fodder for test signals from pantries.
