No 1 was usually the post office in the old days. See attached list from an old Telephone Directory.

Forgot to mention that Fred Flintstone's line is still there for those who have a line on CNet ! As mentioned Bedrock's code was 0238 and Fred's number was 2.

What happened to Youngs and why did they sell old telephones as well as cameras? In 1974 I bought, from Youngs Camera Store through an advert in Amateur Photographer, two NOS Type 232 instruments without dials at £1.50 apiece: boxed, wrapped and hitherto unopened and with silica gel bags in them.

That's interesting to know Russell ... the intercoms I bought were advertised in a local paper [Leicester Mercury]. I did not see any telephones for sale as well, but then again it was a few years before you bought yours.
