Default Black&Decker runs anticlockwise

I recently discovered my Dad's blue metal power drill when tidying up, and decided to check it over, as it has some sentimental value. When I was about 8 I remember sending him demented by drilling into things and blunting his bits! He didn't stop me using it.
All seems fine, brushes good, cable pvc and good, connections secure.
Tried it and it runs in reverse. it is a simple, single speed, non hammer, non reversible and original B&D.
I cannot understand why this should be. I do use these drills with a circuit breaker and rubber gloves, but it is well earthed. I may have been into this in the past, but can't remember. It seems nicely greased and clean so I may have, no one else has!
Can anyone shed some light?

Has it been apart?

This hppens if the connections to the brushes have been reversed, or those to the field coils.

Any any evidence of the field windings being disconnected and reconnected incorrectly?

I must have opened this in the past. It is possible I changed the switch, for example. There is arcing from the brushes, although they seem to be seating ok and plenty of carbon left.
If I was to reverse connections, what would be best? Brushes? I can't see any obvious change has been made, although somebody, must have been me, has marked the live side of the switch.

Hi Arcing on brushes is to be expected to some extent, sometimes reduced with the addition of an X cap on the mains lead.

Either field or brushes can be reversed (not both), whichever is more convenient
