Homebrew comms receiver
I obtained this receiver at a radio rally last Sunday. From the outside it looks like an Eddystone, but its definitely homebrew inside. What makes it unusual is it uses a rotating drum turret type mechanism for the rf coils.
Can anyone with a long memory ever remember seeing anything like this as a constructional article in magazines from yesteryear? I don't think I've ever seen a rotating drum mechanism in a homebrew rx before. Cheers Andy G4OJY |

Re: Homebrew comms receiver
Yes, I saw this on Sunday too and noted the Eddystone finger panel. It certainly did not occur to me it was a homebrew though.
I even thought Marconi Marine.

Looks like an ex-command series IFT in there too, with the black knurled top-knot.

In my misspent younger days, I bought 2 scrap Gothic Seafarer marine receivers from a junk shop. They had turret tuners and I was able to make up one which worked, and I implanted it into a WS19 in place of the PA capacitor. It's not often you see a WS19 general coverage receiver. Sadly- long gone. Happy days. Kind regards Dave G0ELJ Last edited by Station X; 29th Jul 2021 at 12:21 pm. Reason: Quote fixed. |

Re: Homebrew comms receiver
I have a very vague recollection of a magazine construction project using a turret tuner but can't quite put my finger on which magazine it was.
Radio Constructor maybe? |

Re: Homebrew comms receiver
Are you certain it's homebrew? The metalwork looks a bit too good, although it's possible the innards were built around a pre-existing chassis.

Re: Homebrew comms receiver
Hello everyone and thanks for the info.
Andrew, I'm pretty certain it's homebrew looking at the standard of the construction inside. The turret tuner is a bit rough and ready. It also utilises an external psu/speaker which was lethal and required remedial work before it could be powered up. Thanks for the possible link to Radio Constructor Terry. I shall peruse the magazine indexes over the next few evenings. Andy |
