Re: Relative Merits of Soldering Stations.
I worked in a factory with hundreds of Metcals and several hundred Weller TCPs. People often left them on through the day or forgot them overnight, as they did the Wellers. Soldering irons were not considered economic to repair. Some metcal bases proved reliable, but overall the scrapping rate was higher than the TCP.

Re: Relative Merits of Soldering Stations.
I was happy using Antex 25W irons at home until I started using a Weller TC at work and that made me want TC, and I bought an inexpensive Chinese iron which has been very good. I like being able to wind on an extra few degrees when circumstances benefit from it.
A situation arose recently where I used my Antex for the first time in a couple of years; I was really struck by how heavy and inflexible its cable is and it remined me that I once transplanted the lightweight cable from a defunct Henley Solon on to an Antex. B |

Re: Relative Merits of Soldering Stations.
Apart from a couple of Henly Solons, I've always used Antex. currently have three - a 25 watt one for bigger stuff, a 17w for everyday construction and a 12w one for small things. As Bazz says, the cables on them are unnecessarily heavy and stiff, and I've never worked out why Antex fit such cable.
