Default 110mm M4 Bolts

To complete a restoration I need 4x M4 110mm bolts, to hold a case together. The item (a small calibrator) came as a "kit" of bits in a fruit-box, as it had previously been dis-assembled and mucked around with. The case is a plastic clamshell, secured by these bolts. I have virtually completed the repair, but of course the critical bolts were not with it.

They only need to be threaded for the last 10mm, by the way. I can't use studding as the bolt head is neatly recessed into the moulded feet, so I don't have room either to trap a pair of nuts, or to get a hex driver round an araldited nut.

I have checked online and can't seem to find any.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or even a few in "stock"?

many thanks
Jeremy

Let me check my bolt box.
This long shank kind of bolt is similar to ones used on car alternators and starter motors, although more usually M6, these units are getting smaller these days though and this could be an avenue.

Sorry Jeremy, all I have are M5 @ 175mm.
These could be cut down as the shank is 4.3mm, but this style of waisted shank usually means stretch bolts and these are super high strength, making M4 thread cutting probably quite difficult.

Thank you for checking. I am familiar with this type of plastic case, even its smaller Vero cousins, but never had to find the extra long bolts!
I think I'll stick to searching for M4 even though I could try cutting a new thread. I don't have a lathe so removing excess metal is a lot harder.

Could you use some M4 threaded spacers as connectors to join a shorter bolt to a length of studding? This would not work if the long bolts run in bores with a small clearance.

What about threaded brass rod - easily available in many lengths. Braze or solder a nut to one end and file to shape.

My current favourite fixings supplier is this https://www.accu.co.uk/en/ but they only seem to go to 100mm. The other one I know is https://www.pts-uk.com/ but they likewise only go to 100mm. Namrick https://www.namrick.co.uk/ also no.

Longbolts looks like the only place.

I searched the online auction site using 'M4 screw 110mm cap head' and found a set of 5.
They are not plated so only suitable for indoor use.

Bolts for plastic cases often need narrower heads than standard bolts.

Do you know what the thread pitch is?

Thanks for all the very helpful suggestions.

David - That's virtually spot on. After more careful measurement I reckon I can use the longbolts 105mm Posi head - virtually ideal.

Emeritus, I like that spacer idea as a backup. If I can get the spacer well locked into the base.

Kellys_Eye - good idea if I can't find the real thing. Back to metalwork school, filing a nut into a bolt-head!

Craig - I like Accu a lot - I buy small belt replacements from them (old HP 95 inbuilt printers etc). Excellent company.

Silicon - I spotted those but is seems a bit crazy to ship bolts like that from HK. By the way the thread pitch is just standard M4 - nothing exotic.

I think I'll go for the "longscrew" posi 105mm ones.

Many thanks.

You might try westfield fasteners.

Edit- just looked, drew a blank in that length/diameter combination

I've ordered the 105mm M4 Pozis from Longbolts (Thanks David). 3.40 for 10, so I will have a good stock for the future! 99p delivery.
I am very impressed and will keep a note of their details.

Problem solved thanks to the usual helpful crew here, so thread can be closed, with thanks to all contributors.

That was a quick thread!
