Default Sanyo 12T-232 B&W portable.

Hi,
I saw this left at the side of the road a while ago, so took pity on it !
after several months of dry storage I have fitted a new mains lead.
using a variac to power it up I do get light and sound. but need to check it with a uhf signal.
Just wondered if anyone had a schematic available ?
there is also space for a vhf tuner ? but the hole has been covered in the front panel by a badge.
I was thinking could I change it to work on 405 line ?
but it is probably an awful lot of work !

Hi. Here is the manual for this set:

You can trust this website. I've bought three manuals from them.

Also in the 1979-80 volume of R&TVS if you can lay your hands on one.

Imported portables of this era invariably had the VHF tuner deleted and the space filled with screenprinted aluminium disc with the manufacturer's logo or some other boast (e.g. Solid State, Integrated Circuit, Dual Power) printed on it.

Usually found in a yellowed white cabinet, but also available in a rather smart pillar box red.

If this is the one with an edgewise on/off/volume control on the front and two rotaries on the top, I found one of these out for the bin men in about 25 years ago, got it working by replacing the series regulator transistor with one from a scrapper, then brought it up to university (and even bought a B&W licence!) for it. It lived on a stand made from a pile of stacking cardboard fruit boxes covered with a tablecloth, in the corner of our communal kitchen, and did sterling service, usually being on from about 6pm to midnight 7 days a week all year. We even connected up a Ferguson 3V29 from the boot sale round the corner, and had video evenings with friends from the whole block every Sunday. Happy days!

Sanyo used to advertise "IC electronics" with a baroque-styled escutcheon/logo on some TVs and Beta VCRs for the Middle East market.

Is there any way of adjusting the horizontal linearity in this type of set?

Not that I know of. If the linearity is particularly bad then you could investigate the scan coupling capacitor, assuming there is one. Portable tubes didn't usually have a linearity sleeve under the scan coils like large screen sets, though you could check. Magnets might help, but a mono portable was never meant for critical use!
