Default Harpenden, Sun 5th March, AGM/Auction/Swapmeet

The BVWS Spring Auction, Swapmeet and AGM takes place Sunday 5th March at Harpenden Public Halls, see: http://www.bvws.org.uk/events/locations.php for times and directions.

BVWS AGM is in the side hall at 12pm, please do attend and tell us what YOU want from YOUR society looking forward, now that it's nipping at the heels of it's fifth decade! (Indeed much discussion about the future of the hobby in general is an ongoing subject on this forum)

Auction to start afterwards, about 1pm, with approx. 300 lots!

With many stalls, the Bring & Buy table, you will find a huge selection of vintage goodies, including radio, TV, audio/hifi, communications, spares, valves, test gear, service manuals, ephemera, books and much more!

Plus the BVWS table with all the Capacitor values that you need for vintage gear, plus Deoxit, Bulletin back issues and publications/DVD's.

ALL ARE WELCOME, if you're not a member, you can come in as a guest and see what we're all about! You can even take the plunge and join on the day (You'll need to be a member to bid in the auction) Debit/Credit card payments taken for memberships, auction and BVWS stall items.
Hot and cold refreshments served throughout the day!
See you there!

As usual Jeffrey, Brian, Edward and I will be raising money for the Dulwich Vintage Wireless Museum on the Bring and Buy stall. We're no longer in the foyer but just inside the main hall on the left. You can still leave stuff with us during setting up as we'll have a small table by one of the doors to the main hall.

There are 2 ways to sell stuff on the B&B.

1: Donation with 100% going to the Vintage Wireless Museum. We also like this because there's no admin for labels, lists etc.

2: Sales with 10% commission to the Museum. If you have more than a couple of items it helps us a lot if you can make a numbered list with prices. With corresponding numbered price labels stuck on the items. We then add a serial letter so that your No3 is different from another No 3. We can do labeling/listing on the day but it slows things down at busy times. Please use attached listing sheet if possible, to help us

We close the B&B at 1pm but if you've sold anything you can collect the proceeds at any time. Please remember to collect unsold items by 1pm.

You've all been fabulously generous in the past so let's hope for another big donation to the Museum.

See you there

Jeremy

I think I'm right in saying that guests are also welcome to join the BVWS on the day, this will also enable them to bid in the auction.

Cheers

Yes Lee. They can join and pay on the morning (cash/card), the database will then allocate them a membership number and then they can request a bidding card.

Just give Rob time to get the computers set up but remember that the committee including the membership secretary will be in the side hall for the AGM from just before midday up to the start of the auction, so well before then please.

The auction catalogue is attached (and also on the BVWS website). Further lots may be added on the day.

Note that there are no lot photos for Harpenden auctions.

I shall be at Harpenden on Sunday, helping on the bring & Buy stall.

I will have a number of books for sale there, but to save space & time I have a list of broadcast TV related manuals I was going to leave at home, they a unlikely sale.

However have a look at my list and if you want one I will bring it along.

Regards Brian

The Admiralty Handbook sounds interesting if you are able to bring it.

Thanks to all the BVWS hard-workers for keeping Harpenden going. All to it's usual high standard. Not the most active auction but everything got shifted. To those not there, Mike B has implemented an amusing random "If this lot's not sold it will just be added to the next lot" policy. Great fun as some small "wins" came with a complementary radiogram or similar!

Thanks to members' generosity the Bring & Buy raised over £400 for Museum funds. There was a good selection of items and we were mobbed for the first hour!

Many thanks to Jeffrey, Brian, Edward and Peter for helping to run the Bring & Buy stall.

It was missing a lot of bits (meters, valves) and was rough/rusted/dirty. It still made £220 I think!

I heartily endorse Jeremy's thanks to the team for another well-run event.
Auction prices were disappointingly low (from the seller's viewpoint), but this meant that there were many great bargains. I couldn't resist 1930's mains sets at £5 each, so I bought five. Some of them would have been ten times that only a few years ago. And it's only about the price of a magazine!
The only problem is where to put them.....

I too was at Harpenden today and also the AGM. I was only thinking on my way there how much time Mike gives to the BVWS and so his resignation, whilst a surprise, is understandable. Many thanks for all your hard work Mike
I hope his drive back home was a bit slower than the rate at which he dispatched the auction lots . Breathtaking!!
It does make you realise at these events how aged the membership is getting. I'm the best part of 50 and I didn't see many people there younger than me, apart from our new Bulletin editor. It does make me wonder what the future holds for the hobby.
We have the same issue in our car club: I'm one of the youngest people in that as well
I'm sure many forum members were there today, but we can't identify each other. I suppose we all ought to wear name badges but that would seem a bit naff. It would be nice to say 'hi' to people we had been communicating with when we meet 'in the flesh'.
Enjoyable day though,
Cheers Nick

Smile Re: Harpenden, Sun 5th March, AGM/Auction/Swapmeet

I got a number of nice items on the B+B stall and managed to chat to a few members.

The auction prices were remarkably low for the quality of the lots. I picked up a Murphy A50 for £10 even though it was complete, in good condition with the exception of the speaker cloth and had not been messed around with and an ideal set for restoration. I thought it was going to go for £50 or more.

I also bought a pre-war Bush PB50 for £5 which apart from missing a knob is complete and with a good cabinet. Another restoration I am looking forward to.

I was surprised the colour televisions hardly made anything especially the hybrid one. It is a pity I don't have much space.

I'd have loved to have given a home to one of those console sets but it came down to having the room to put it. As it is, I am going to have to get rid of a few sets just to make room for the three I bought yesterday. Space: the final frontier.

Thanks to all the organisers and volunteers who do a terrific job as usual.
