Probably an early hard of hearing system. Our Church had one, the earpieces were issued on request, and plugged into a few of the pews.

Ah, interesting. They were all on pews near the front - and it is a big church so that could be an explanation. They disappear under the floor so I have no idea where the other ends are.

Somewhere hidden behind the pulpit, maybe? Near a mains socket?

Or even in the actual base of the pulpit, if it's hollow. Look for a secret removeable panel or door! I'm really intrigued now 🤔

There must have been a mic on the pulpit, connected to some sort of PA unit (which would need a power supply)

The wiring in question is pretty ancient - pre war I would think so maybe a simple intercom sort of circuit? There is no sign of the other ends of the wire anywhere now but the PA system is at least the second to be installed so I imagine that anything around the pulpit was cut away many years ago. I only found the pew ends of the leads when I was putting brackets on the bottom to make them more moveable.

The pulpit is solid alabaster

Not unreasonable given that 2A, 5A, 10A and 15A two pin plugs all existed at various times. Just for good measure, the L-N pin spacings were different from the three pin varieties, too. No continental style interchageability here!

It was on the choir vestry which is always freezing cold so was probably for a heater. Surprisingly for a church built in 1898 it seems that there were never any open fireplaces anywhere

Was it an actual wall socket, or a plug-in double adapter?

Hope it wasn't for a heater, as it sounds like there would have been no provision for an earth connection

I will find it and post a photo. It is a two pin socket. No earth, but it looks very old indeed.

I think they were telephone type single headphones on a long handle for the hard of hearing.John.

The only thing that makes me wonder about that theory is that the cable was single core wire rather than multi core flex. I suppose there may have been some sort of socket fastened to the pew for the headphone.

There are all sorts of redundant sockets and piping for gas lights dotted about

I wonder if those apparently single core wires actually contain two, very thin, separate cores.

Headphones have this sort of flex, with one sheathed core, and one bare copper core, enclosed in what looks like a single wire.

No, it is very old twisted pair, silk covered bell wire.
