Teleton Tuner Amplifier F2000 queries - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Good Morning, Just acquired the above tuner/amp, primarily as my Dad got one when I was 5, this was my introduction to stereo !.

Does any one know the rated power output ?, looking at the transformer, it cant be too powerful ! although this one seems very quiet ?.

The scale illumination bulbs have failed except one, each bulb has black lines drawn on (with a felt pen?), was this standard or a previous owner's attempt to dim the lights a little ?, there are 4 of them !.

A previous owner has installed a DIY magnetic cartridge pre-amp, was this any one on here ?.

Radiomuseum says 30W so probably 15W per channel which wasn't an unreasonable amount for a tuner amp of the period

Hi Mike, that's the one !,Thanks . 15 watts ?, Dad's speakers, also Teleton were rated at 4 watts RMS, they didn't last long.

Just need to find where those watts have gone to !

If you measure the rail-rail dc supply volts, subtract about three volts to give the p-p output swing V then calculate (V*V)/8Z where Z is speaker impedance. That will give a ballpark figure for the maximum output power it will deliver for musical peaks. Longterm continuous sinewave will be somewhat lower as the dc rails sag. (And everything gets hot and goes pop, possibly

It's possible that the rating was a guess based on the rating on the back so would be the maximum consumption 40W

All those bulbs probably took 10W

Also at this time people were advertising the output as Peek program and all sort of other ways of biging up the published output.

Heralds calculations are excellent way of finding the true output.

RMS was a way of describing the "real" output, but is also not correct but it was sort of useful for making like for like comparisons.

Apologies for venturing off-topic here, but now you mention it I've heard RMS referred to as both Root Mean Square AND "Real Music Sound"... Seems a fantastic way of embellishing ones output figures, all you need do is to come up with another meaning for an accepted "standard" initialism

Hi, thanks for all of your replies.

The power supply seems rather crude, half wave rectification, minimal smoothing, providing around 27 volts DC. The scale lamps are fed from a 6 volt tap off of the transformer.

Does any one have a schematic ?, volume seems very low although not distorted at all ?

Mine is slightly different than the one in the picture in that it has a signal strength meter on the left hand of the tuning scale.

27V rail to rail would give a bit under 10W into 8ohms. With half wave minimal smoothing that would drop away fairly quickly too.

I had one of these many years ago, with an efficient pair of speakers there was no shortage of volume at all, I used it with a Sonotone 9TAHC Ceramic cartridge, it sounded OK for what it was, the FM performance was quite good but the AM rather less so!

5 + 5 W RMS sounds about right. After disconnecting the home built RIAA pre-amp, it seemed to perk up a fair bit !, a new set of bulbs in the scale lamps has cheered it up a little. On my Dad's, we too had a Sonotone 9TAHC in a Garrard SP25 Mk 2, sounded pretty good. Thanks for all your comments.
