Re: AVO Multimeter survey
More from down under. ---
8 Mk. V, 09163 8V/3/74. 40 Mk. II, 6231-B-1051. 9 Mk.II, 13911568. I have double checked 09163 8V/3/74, as it appears out of kilter with that appearing in post 762. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Kiwi,
I haven't collated the serial numbers on Model 8 Mark Vs yet but it is possible that the serial numbers do not run as a continuous series. It may be that the first five figures are reset to a low figure, perhaps zero, at certain dates. PMM |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
AVO Model 12 serial number 677-263.
Just acquired this meter without case or shunts etc. It is in a bit of a sad state but hopefully with a lot of TLC it can be restored to it's former glory. Al

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I have just created a hybrid of a Model 7 Mk II meter movement in a Model 7 Mk 1 panel and case; I have written about it here. The serial number remains as 72009-A-857, as unfortunately the original Mk 1 movement was damaged and was disposed of before I thought to record its serial number!

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
I don't think my newly acquired AVO Model 8 knows what it is!
The serial number is: 52918-C-1056 and there is a space between 250V and 1000V on the D.C. Range switch ( no 500V setting ) which suggests a Mk II but then there is a fuse ( and a spare ) in the battery compartment and the Working Instructions on the back says "Model 8 Mk III" Either way, it don't work - not yet anyway Best Wishes to all, Lee. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
More old meters have knocked at the door of the Avo Retirement Home (Bewdley Branch - planning permission for an extension has been applied for) and been granted residence, as follows:
Model 8 Mk II s/n 104244-C-360, fully working Model 8 Mk II s/n 4144-1064, siezed movement Model 8 Mk III s/n 87206-1068, fully working (even had good batteries in it) Model 7 Mk 1 s/n 46305-A-158, corroded movement One quick question if I may - where can I find the serial number on a Model 40 with 'Admiralty Pattern 47A' on the instruction plate? There don't appear to be any numbers on the scale plate, so if the serial number was originally on a label on the side like my other Model 40, it's since long disappeared.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Phil,
The serial number of a 47A should be on the scale plate. It could be that the movement has been replaced if there isn't one. It wasn't until the 1970s that sticky labels came into use and the newest 47A I've seen was 1948. The scaleplate of a 47A would have been hand calibrated and most would have the figures written in by hand too. This would normally include the serial number. PMM. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Peter,
You're probably right that the movement has been replaced - there is definitely no serial number where it 'should' be, in fact there's a suspicious-looking blank space where a serial number should have been inked-in. The scale plate however is definitely a hand-ruled one, see photo, and the pointer has a red disc which may enable approximate dating. Note that "Model 40" is cast into the front panel, but the instruction plate on the back says "Admiralty Pattern model 47A".

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Phil,
The Model 40 front panel is quite common on Type D Avometers but it looks like even the Admiralty had to accept what was going during the Second World War. Maybe we should ask for a survey of how many ex-services meters which are not Model 40s (Models 40?) have a Model 40 front panel. That might show when these panels were used in this way. I would guess around 1941/2 when things were most desperate. I don't know what meters the Army (REME, Royal Signals and others) used as there are, as far as I am aware, no Army specific Avometers from this era. The Type D would have been very useful for motor vehicle work and some have a Broad Arrow (feon) at the top centre of the scaleplate where others have the crown and "AM" letters. It could just be that the broad arrow type were for Army use although I think they still have the 10S/10610 Air Ministry instruction plate. Still, if they could live with a Model 40 front panel.... Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Latest acquisition: Avo Model 8 Mk III (on the instruction plate) but a simple figure "8" on the front panel button. Serial number 168201-C-464.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hi,
Mine is a model 8 Mk V and the only thing remotely like a serial number is on a label on the right-hand side and repeated inside the battery compartment. It is: 0024693 LA 8V The "LA" is over to the right and the "8V" is on a line below the number 0024693. There are no identifying marks on the movement face. Colin. |

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
On its way to me and donated by a friend, a Model 8 Mk III Nato version, stock code 6625-99-650-2822. If it carries a conventional serial number I'll report it when it arrives.

Re: AVO Multimeter survey
Hello all,
I have just acquired another Model D, AVO and it was in a bit of a state as there was ’silver paint’ that had been splashed onto the front of the meter as shown in the photo below, however after a good clean internally and externally (3 hours later) the AVO has come up looking like new (see the after photo) Cannot say the same for the leads though. The Serial Number is: D 16405-1044 1944. Paul. |
