I think Sideband has the answer as to why the pips break off. When I was young, (and so were those valve-holders), pips breaking off was an unknown phenomenon. The springs are now getting hard, rusty, and inflexible, thus causing these breakages.
I wonder if the spring device was 'designed in' with the vibration of being used in car radios in mind ? Tony.
