Smile Re: Pye Transistor when manufactured (Q8)

I am working on a Ferranti PT1104 at this very moment. It has the same circuit board as your Q8? They must have used the same board in quite a few sets.

Your Q8 is in exceptional condition. I think I have one in my collection somewhere. Will have to dig it out

If you have to take out the PCB, just a warning about that screw head in the hole in the PCB.

Don’t unscrew it, it secures the magnet in the speaker and nothing to do with the PCB. It was common to get these radios in for repair when someone had tried to remove the PCB and find the speaker ruined.

I thought it was the back end of the tuning cap that had a screw showing on the track side of the board.
I had forgotten about it being the speaker. I never undid it.

Yes Paul I was surprised at its condition, and being such a novice thats why I asked about possible reproductions as it looked like new. Thanks Frank for info on screw, all advice is very much appreciated.

It’s both but I only had problems with some undoing the speaker.

Hi
Sent a message yesterday but it looks like it did not get through!!
I am working on a Ferranti PT1104 which looks like it has the same board.

I think I have a Q8 in my collection somewhere. Will have to dig it out.
Ekco seem to have used the same basic PCB for quite a few models.
Most of them seem to come from 1961 to 1963.

Started radio and it is working ok. Apart from quite a bit of backround hiss which you can hear more at the end of the video link which is attached, any advice. It is picking up quite a few stations on MW and the volume is very good. It was very crackly and jumpy, so a spray with servisol cleared that up. Other than clean the waveband switch thats all I have done. Just pleased it is working, as my trobleshooting skills are very limited to say the least.

I don’t think that background hiss is the radio, typical MW interference from today’s electronics.
Sounds good, they were never going to be hifi but did the job they were designed for.

Think you are right about the interference Frank, Sounds better in different parts of the house. And one of main culprits is laptop adaptor.

I have the same Pye model stashed away somewhere. If I remember it worked on MW but not LW.But I did notice that it did sound good on our local AM stations.

I have also a Ferranti with no model number but the PCB does looks the same as the Pye Q8 and the Ferranti PT1104. This one works ok on MW but on LW it just picks up MW stations at various points across the band with lots of noise and weaker than on the MW band.
I have not dared take it apart yet as I have heard there can be problems removing the dial and have heard that many a speaker of these has been destroyed by disturbing that screw on the back of the speaker.
I just wondered if anyone could identify the model number so I can download the correct circuit diagram.

Could be the PT1056. There were two versions of the Q8, with or without bias stabilisation or peak performance control in Pye speak. The 1056 appears to be the earlier one. You can tell which by the presence or absence of the seventh transistor, which is diode connected.

Thanks for your helpful responses. It does look like the PT1056. It only worked on medium wave in Cornwall its sensitivity was ok for a short superhet radio just picking up BBC R4 West region and struggled with Luxembourg at night.
Its interesting to note that it uses the OC transistors I thought all these chassis used the Newmarket range of transistors.
I shall download both circuit diagrams before trying to remove the PCB.
