Re: Please ID this PYE record player
This is a very rare Pye "Super Black Box" from 1957. It had a powerful EL34 single-ended amp (+ 2 x EF86s) feeding 2 side full-range speakers and a very wide electrostatic unit at the front. Very advanced, it used similar circuitry to the equally rare Pye "Mozart" Hi Fi series. Pre-Stereo of course, but it sounded super and with a very wide sound-stage when sited correctly. Well worth restoring!

Are you intending to repair this yourself or do you need a professional to do it?

Wow. Thanks so much. Is this a DIY-able project or should we send it to an expert? If so, can you recommend an expert?

Re: Please ID this PYE record player
I would suggesr sending to a Member here. That Collaro RC456 autochanger is complex, the TX88 cartridge may need replacing (as it is it cannot be used for Stereo LPs) and the output transformer in the amplifier is a critical component. It's also likely that the tweeter may have failed by now. Could be quite a big job, but well worth it.

Re: Please ID this PYE record player
First things first, if not too late do not operate this for more than a few seconds "to see if it works". Tempting we know!
Do you have any electronic or electrical experience? There are components which are likely to cause irreparable damage unless changed. If possible, post some internal pictures to help us to help you. |
