Default HMV 2340 radiogram

I have recently purchased an HMV 2340 and found that the cartridge wires are not connected to the cartridge and there are to many permutations to attempt to guess it.

The deck is a Garrard 3000 and the cartridge is a KS 40A. Does anyone know which colour wire goes to which pin on the cartridge. Also if I find the cartridge is faulty what would be a good replacement.

Many Thanks

Mick

The cartridge may well be OK. Your record deck/cartrige combination is a good one. Are the wires coloured red, black, blue and white?

Hello and welcome. Standard wiring as follows:-

White - Left channel,
Red - Right channel,
Blue - Left ground,
Green Right ground,

(though it doesn't matter if you mix up the grounds). If I recall correctly the 2 narrow set pins are the channels and the 2 wide set the grounds. Right is right as you look at the front of the cart....I think!

Don't rush out and buy a new cart if it doesn't do the trick - tell us what happens. Does the radio work?

If you look very carefully, there should be tiny letters with + and - signs embossed on the cartridge. The + signs are the channels, and the - signs are the grounds.

Thankyou all for your responses, very much appreciated.

The wires are Red, Black, Green and White.

Yes the radio does work after a fashion, the indicator to tell you what station you are on is not there so its just a case of tuning in and working out what station you are listening to.

Yes there is a + and - sign did not see it when looking at the cartridge needed to get a magnifying glass.

Resetting the dial pointer will be a fiddly job. It could be left as it is, especially as you may just be listening to the FM waveband in the main. In Glamorgan the number of stations broadcasting on VHF are fewer than in many places - so it should be quite easy to find your most-frequently-listened-to-stations. The HMV 2340 was top of the range at the time and it has 4 speakers.
