Default Philips HX428A Turntable Help

Hi All,

New guy here...

Hopefully you can help me or point me in the right direction.

I've just inherited a Radio/Gramophone and can't seem to get the turntable to work.

The radio works and is receiving power but the turntable just won't start.

It might be something simple (here's hoping...)

Thanks in advance

James

Just swing the pick up arm over to the right, this should start the motor. Edward

Hi James
Welcome to the forum!
I am not familiar with the model, but a lot of Philips single play record players had a motor switch controlled by the pickup arm. To start you lift the arm from the rest and move it backwards slightly away from the turntable. The deck will then start. When it reaches the end of the record it should trip the switch and stop the deck. Some decks will return the arm to the rest before stopping. The more basic ones just stopped with the stylus in the lead out groove.
Hope this helps.
regards,
Rich.

Yes to the above. This is the compact little record deck that Philips fitted to lots of models. Should have a twistable head to change styli - N = Normal or 78, M = Microgroove - 33s and 45s. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply both,

I tried moving the arm away from the turntable to kick start it but still no luck (I'm probably doing something wrong)

The speakers do make a "popping" sound when you move the arm away and towards the turntable but it isn't turning.

Do you think I'm doing something wrong or could it be something more serious?

I'm desperate to get it working I have a record that I brought back from Nashville i'd love to play

Many thanks

James

The pop from the speaker when the arm is moved suggests that the motor switch is operating correctly.

Can you hear the motor running? It may have seized.

Also, check the grub screw on the stepped motor pulley.

Thanks Guys,

I've finally got some movement on speed 78 (not sure whether it's full speed as it takes some time to get going)

As soon as I switch it to 45/33 it stops. Must be seized up....

Any DIY tips to take it further?

It's so close I can feel it

Hi James, the deck probably needs to be serviced as most of the grease will have dried out and gone hard. The idler pulley that links the motor to the turntable could be slipping or the motor mounts could be loose. All stock faults on this type of deck.
Do you have the skills to strip it and sort it yourself?

Hi Ed,

No I don't to be fair, I'd rather leave it to someone more qualified than myself to do that.
I notice you are local, anywhere you would recommend?

Many thanks

Just out of interest, is it likely to be worth any money?

It's from the 50's I believe...

Many thanks

Usually, Philips record players from this era are avoided like the plague, because the original "tilting" cartridges are usually dead, and replacements are extremely expensive.
Yours, however, has already had a replacement cartridge fitted, so if you can get the turntable working, I would think it should sell for around the £30 -40 mark. It has to be said though, that these are not the most attractive record players from that era, so be prepared to be flexible if you decide to sell it.
