From memory I am pretty certain that only the 'C' variant of the VCR517 had a long persistance phosphor, and even then it was not anything like as long as say a 5FP7. So if your CRT is just a plain vanilla VCR517 or a VCR517B then it should be fine for TV use.

I also think that the VCR517 series were happier at a higher EHT and thus produced a smaller spot size but of course required a tad more deflection voltage for the same scan.

Hi,
I have builded a 625line Television monitor by using Oscilloscope CRT, i tried with DG7-32, DG7-36, 2AP1 ,5BP1 and 5BP4 they work. I have posted in this forum somewhere with the title of "round screen project" but i cant find it.
I have VCR97 with socket i havent try it. The main purpose i want to see how the simplest circuit can work.
The circuit i use only 4 or 5 valves. but linearity is not good, sometime horizontal sync unstable.

Hi Sean.
My dad built a set with the VCR97 years ago I "think" I still have the blueprint somewhere and will have a look. The Veiwmaster of the early 50's is also a great project.

This may be a naive question and I don't want to go OT but would the people like chipp who contemplate building a repro mirror lid tv 30's style [another thread] benefit from building this type of reproducer rather than using a more modern [and square] set?
I'm referring to the VCR97 type size and the fact that it is a round screen crt which I believe was originally the only type available for early tv. Dave

PS I do have the box and handbook for a nineteen fifties tv kit plus photos of it working but [sadly] not the set itself.

Sadly, I think it would be a bit dim for practical viewing by Chipp...

Looks good in the dark though Steve. That's how we used to view anyway
circa 1955 if not 1935. Thanks for ex pic. I'm just glad it wasn't a completely daft idea. Dave
