Default Logic IC prefixes?

Hi any one know the difference between the HCF4011 and the F4011 indeed is there a difference thanks for any help Mick

No, there's no difference. The prefix, in this case, just indicates the manufacturer. The only exception is if the prefix is '74HC', which means the chip is made with a more modern, higher-speed semiconductor process, but doesn't have such a wide range of supply voltage.

The suffix can be significant, though: most 4000-series chips are suffixed 'BE', which is the normal variety. There exist some with the suffix 'UBE' which means they're unbuffered, so they typically operate more slowly, can't drive as much current from their outputs, but are preferable in some analogue-like applications such as oscillators.

A couple of snippets from the book 'Modern TTL Circuits Manual' (Modern in 1994 that is, when it was published by Nenes), by R.M.Marston might be of interest.

The information outlines the manufacturers' prefixes and suffixes, and the basic coding system that gives each I.C. its name.
