Default Brenell Mk5 Series 2, half track mono

Mark 5 Series 2, Type M. Serial No. 16852/2547

Half track mono with 2 heads and 3 speeds.

The mechanics have not been inspected, but the electronics appears to be in good condition and unmolested.
I have not tried powering it up - it has not been used for decades and can be expected to need the usual mechanical and electronic overhaul.

This is being sold by the National Museum of Computing as part of their surplus sale and is strictly for collection only. If not sold in advance via this notice it will be in their jumble sale next Sunday (September 15th, see here: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=159449 )

Price 50

This should have three heads if it is a Brenell mk 5 "M" series 2.
The M stands for Monitor ,

Thanks for that information.

I won't see the machine again until Saturday, will try to investigate...

On the photo of the amplfier panel there appears to be an unused BL socket on the right hand module. Would that normally have a head cable plugged into it?

I wonder if a 3rd head has been pinched for another machine...

I had better add "caveat emptor" for the benefit of anyone who might be interested.

It appears to have a magic eye where the meter should be.

Back in the day; 1962. I bought a new Brenell Mk 5. It had a magic eye record level monitor.

Great reliable machine it served me 20 yrs. I replaced the electronics with a Stern Radio stereo kit, Bogen heads, in late 60's sometime.

I had a 5M and it definitely had a meter and also a third head. This looks like a 'bitsa' as the deck only says Mk5 not Mk5M. Looks as though it's only the label and/or the cabinet that is type M.

The label with serial number is actually stapled to the (detachable) cabinet lid.

I wonder if the lid has been swapped from another machine, some time in the past? This would mean that the "Type M" and serial number don't apply to this recorder. The amplifier panel is labelled "Mark 5, S2" .

I have found a manual here for the standard Mark 5 S2 (not "M"):
http://museumofmagneticsoundrecordin...rsBrunell.html
... which seems to correspond with this machine, with two heads.
It advises that there was a choice of either a magic eye or round meter. It also indicates that the R-P head should be plugged into the empty socket I referred to earlier!

I'll have a good look on Saturday, if only to satisfy my own curiosity...
