Good for what purpose? They are very low powered, but collectible so will cost more for that reason. Uses ECL82 valves which I think are nice sounding.

Needs some mods for hifi use. See http://www.tube-classics.de/TC/Germa...%20S81/S81.htm

Default Telefunken S82 amp

(Closed, but maybe the mods will resurrect it ;-) )

I have just been given one of these to look at by a customer. Quite distinctive looking, and there seem to be a surprising number of them on the web.
As said by others, not the loudest amp on the planet, but I think it's probably loud enough for the average room.
The owner has had it for a number of years and acquired it fitted into an even older radiogram(now long departed).

Feed it with a medium output cartridge and into efficient speakers and it will be more than load enough.

These are interesting amplifiers possibly because they were designed for the purpose of upgrading older equipment for stereo.

However, here is a curiosity, these amplifiers feed the ECL82 pentode section with a high pass filter with -3dB point set roughly at 800Hz while the low frequency for each channel is summed and output via a three pin din socket.

Schematic here https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...30&postcount=6

Some overall negative feedback is applied but on their own only reproduce from mid frequencies upwards.

Cheers
Rich

So best way to use it would be to connect it to two small speakers placed either side of your old record player, then connect the upgrade stereo cartridge to the S82 inputs and take its filtered bass output to the input of the record player amp. Great fun with lots of knobs to twiddle to set it up to sound how you like. Turn up/down the S82 to adjust treble and the record player to adjust bass.

Not so different from modern mini audio systems with two tiddly left and right speakers and a so-called subwoofer (usually a one note boombox) that you hide round the back. I've got a computer speaker one connected to the telly- sounds better than the telly on its own but really awful on Classic FM female announcers' speech for some reason.

These amps were sold off cheaply in the 60s through adverts in Practical Wireless which might account for the fair few that seem available but not for the daft prices they command now!
