Hi there,
There's a thread on this forum from 11 years ago created by a chap called Tim from Cheshire who had an old Morphy Richards CA75 iron he was hoping to use to wax his skis. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/printthread.php?t=103107 Bizarrely, I'm also a chap called Tim from Cheshire who's just bought an old CA75 (£6 delivered on vinted ?) with the intention of waxing skis and snowboards with it.A user called Heatercathodeshort mentioned on that thread that the thermostat would be set to cut out at 156C on the wool setting (2 dots). Does anyone have any idea what it would therefore cut out at on the nylon setting (1 dot). If it's likely to be somewhere around the 120/130 mark this will be a perfect waxing iron. I've just used it for my lads' school shirts and it's a great iron. Almost a shame to cover it in wax but i don't imagine it'd stand regular use now. Also, does anyone know how old it's likely to be? It has model no. 40181, serial 30013596 and lists an 0800 freephone helpline on the sticker so i presume it must be early 80s at the earliest as I imagine 0800 free numbers are a relatively modern invention (relatively speaking). Thanks in advance |

Sorry you had to wait a while for a reply but I guess with the snow coming this week I'm not too late to help. That Morphy Richards should be fine for skis. I have a similar one here - model 40160 - I just found in the back of a cupboard and came online curious to see how when they made them as this looks like a 1980s one. No serial no. on it but the Morphy Richards branded mains plug has sheathed pins which I don't think were around before then. It also says BS800:1977 on the base so can't be older than that. Looks just like a CA75 though as the shape stayed the same for decades. By coincidence I was also thinking of how it would make a good ski iron as back in the 1990's.
