Default 625 to 405 Aurora Standards converter

Hi All,
I'm considering purchasing a 625 lines to 405 lines Aurora Standards Converter. If I decide to buy one, I would want one that gives out a really clean signal so that the TV's picture is as clear and as clean as possible.

Which brands and models do you recommend?

Thanks, Paul

Well you don't have too much choice right now.

Aurora Design is the manufacturer.

I think the model you require is:

SCRF405A PAL(625) to 405/25i with RF System A modulator.

These are or have been available already imported into the UK, I think by Crowthorne Tubes.

I am sure someone will know if he currently has stock

Cheers

I bought mine from Crowthorne Tubes a couple of years ago, And will be getting another when funds allow.

The Aurora SCRF405A is a truly excellent piece of kit that I cannot recommend highly enough.

I have tried both the Dinosaur and Pineapple converters, but the Aurora wins hands down, the picture quality is superb and is a very simple device to connect up and use, go ahead and treat yourself!

The Aurora is worth every penny! I bought mine a few years ago, as I'd been gathering 405 line sets, and had nothing but a pattern generator to make them display anything. The signal from it is very strong, and clear, I can easily run multiple sets from it.

It also has a handy feature of displaying a pre-programmed test card when there's no video input.

Here's a couple of off-screen shots taken recently using the Aurora. The shot of the test card isn't one of the best from this set, as I hadn't fitted the new EHT smoothing cap when the photo was taken.

Regards,
Lloyd.

Another benefit of the Aurora is the availability of all the VHF channels. It was an eye-opener to me to find that most sets with 12 or 13 channel positions only had biscuits for the local channels when first supplied. I bought a Domino, which was excellent, but found that I only had one set, an RGD portable, which could receive Ch1!

Crowthorne Tubes have them for £185, I think that includes special delivery too. They're $225 (approx £145 at the moment) ordered direct from the US, but you'll probably get hit for a hefty customs charge when it arrives.

Here's a link to their website: Aurora single converter

My advice as a happy customer, stick with Crowthorne Tubes. Import duty plus VAT plus VAT on everything including carriage and it's a no brainer.

I got an Aurora from the US. When I get around to it I will order a spare (not that they go wrong!) but I'll get it from Crowthorne.

Hi Dave, did you receive a customs charge for it?

No, it was all done legit and just came through. It seems to be hit miss and wind direction who gets charged for such items.

I've bought 2 Auroras from the US one 405 and one 819. I had a relative in NY so both were sent there and subsequently brought over in hand luggage. I realise not everyone is in this fortunate position however.
