Default Back coated tape on very old valve R2R

I have a philips magnet band schreiber from the 1940's
I heard someplace that you cant use back coated tape on old machines because it would short out the erase head, is that true in my case?
The preamp is valve of course and i am curious before i try this out.
Thank you,
-Chris

It wont short out any heads but if the machine uses pressure pads it will clog them
