I have been given a HMV record player from the 50's thats been stored in a cupboard for at least 30 years.
The power /volume control is missing, there is no model number anywhere. Does anyone reconise it? I would love a circuit diagram so i can restore it properly. I have stripped the deck and set it up and it works a treat, the cartridge was dead so found a replacement. Now my attention to the amp which has some dodgy caps in it plus a burnt out resistor, hence tge need for a circuit diagram. Can anyone help please. |

The cartridge as shown in your photos is a Mono turnover type - so be careful what type of LP records you play on it!

I have since then replaced the cartridge with a stereo one, wired mono, but i think i will just use it for 45's if i can get the amp working. Got a circuit thanks to cobaltblue but still no sound. Don't get much free time at the moment so will need to go through the amp in stages changing the caps.

Your fault as described is somewhat confusing. What does "power/volume control missing" mean? - I can see that it's still there.

The volume control in the picture is my replacement, but can anyone tell me what value the caps should be ? Most are broken so new ones will need to be fitted, but i can't work out if they should be pf or uf from the diagram.

If you have excessive hum, that long trailing lead to the rear "stereo" socket (which you will not be needing) could be a possible culprit.

Some of the capacitors, especially around the tone and volume controls, are shown as μμ(F) (note the double μ symbols) which is the same as picofarads. Other values such as that for C6 and C8 are in μF.

Those caps around d the input and tone control circuit are unlikely to need replacement.

Unfortunately when someone removed the original volume control they damaged the caps and renderer them useless, hence the need to replace them.
Thank you for your help. |

uuF is the American pF so something marked as 470uuF is the same as 470pF. I think there were a few British companies that used uuF for a short time.

I now have it up and running good amount of volume and the tone control has quite a good range, however, the bass control does nothing ?
I am not expecting a lot of difference, but something should happen ! The control itsself is ok and so are the resistors its c3 i am questioning, what value do you think it should be it just says .003 ? Any ideas please ? |

In that position, it's got to be .003uF! Same as 3000pF. Nearest modern replacement is .0033uF or 3300pF.

The lack of a suffix shows that C3 is 0.003uF by default.
0.003uuF or 0.003pF is a ridiculously low valve. You'd never be able to buy one!

Is there anything you can recommend please. Just had a closer look and the lead is broken right up to the body so i can't get a solder connection on it.
