Default Help identifying Radio

Hi All,

I have recently acquired a vintage Radio that I am trying to identify before I restore and thought the collective mind might be able to help
This had been rehomed into a new cabinet without a speaker so have little to no markings

It has 3 x EL84, 2 x EF86 and 1 x ECC83 plus an EZ81 rectifier.

I am a bit confused with the EL84's as there are 3. I can only see a single output transformer.

I have attached some pics which hopefully help..

Thanks

Are you sure it's a radio? I can see no evidence of a tuning capacitor or tuning scale. It looks more like an amplifier.

What's inside the screened box the right hand rotary control goes into?

There's a higher-than-audio frequency coil on the chassis, but I agree that it doesn't look much like a radio, nor does the valve line-up suggest that.

My guess is that it's an amplifier from a tape recorder, the coil being for the bias/erase oscillator. 3 off EL84 could be a push-pull audio output and a separate one for said oscillator.

Hi

The laced wiring, stencil IDs for the valve types and generally high standard of construction suggest something for the professional market rather than domestic.

If for a Tape Deck, I would have said Brenell or Ferrograph but the knob layout doesn't match.

I was thinking professional kit too - maybe something from a small cinema or factory.

Yep, I guessed radio at first glance but you're right as after a little clean can see some inputs for Tape, Radio and what looks like pick up in the enclosed box?

The box appears to be a pre-amp possibly with correction to suit a pick up.

Probably a 16mm projector unit. The third EL84 probably supplies high frequency for the exciter lamp.

It reminded me of a Truvox tape pre amp I had in about 1959.
