Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
Hi. I've managed to destroy the ON/OFF switch on my Dansette Challenge 100. Are new switches available? If not my machine is junk.

Re: Dansette Switches
I assume it's combined with either the volume or tone control. In what way is it broken?
A photo might help, someone may have something suitable. |

Re: Dansette Switches
Well it certainly will not be junk!
Either a replacement volume/on/off control can be fitted or - easier - the broken switch bypassed and you switch off at the mains wall socket. You then just use the volume control in th normal way. What skills so you have to safely do this?

Re: Dansette Switches
The Dassette Challenge uses the 14-3 amplifier (I don't know of a Dassette Challenge 100 but perhaps the same amp?)
The 14-3 amp has a 1M volume control (presumably log law) and a 25k tone control. The diagram doesn't indicate but the mains switch is most likely part of the volume control. So you'll want a 1meg log pot with DPSW. |

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
Hi. It is an off/on volume control switch. where do i get a 1 meg pot with a DPSW?
It was my own fault for damaging it. The Control knob snapped of and my clumsy attempts to repair caused the damage. The parts in the Pot. are all loose and the power can't be switched off. Can the pot be repaired? thanks for your replies. Hoddbod ' |

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
These can be bought from Maplins. You may need to saw off the 1/4" spindle to the correct length and then make the 7 solder joints. Is this something you feel you can do safely? As I already advised, a much easier and cheaper option is to by-pass the switch and use the wall mains socket switch. Again if you have any doubt about doing this safely, you can place a Post on this site asking for help from someone local to you. Please advise that you have read and understood this.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
I don't think Maplin do 1M LOG pots with a mains switch, but I'm happy to be corrected if you can post a link Edward.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
Last time I needed one (also for a Dansette) they didn't, so I bought a 1 meg lin with switch *and* a plain 1 meg log then transferred the switch over.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
You're dead right and I am corrected. I guess I was relying on a long ago purchase. Cricklewood do have a SPSW version I know. Even so, we've yet to hear back as to which option the OP will go for - replacement or bypass, with maybe an inline switch added.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
Hi,
I've had the same problem with record players in the past. If originality isn't an issue, I've just fitted a double pole toggle switch to the motor board or around the back. Another dodge is to fit a double pole in-line table lamp switch into the mains lead. Although accommodating the earth lead (if fitted) may be tricky. Just a thought. Cheers, Pete.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
You could replace the damaged volume control with a non-switched one, and the tone control with a switched 22K. More work, but they're cheap to buy.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
It is a volume control with switch, I am presuming that’s what is in the player at the moment so should be wired the same way.
They stock quite a few values so make sure you select the correct one. Aplogies if it’s not what you were wanting. Edit. If there is any doubt, contact Bowood, they are usually at radio rallies and are very helpful.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
If you find a new switch/control, confirm the switch is rated for our mains voltage, 230 volts, they usually are but best to be sure.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
To Nuvistor.
Bowood Electronics List Pot 004 as Logarithmic track DP Switch.25 diam. 9.5 diam. hole. But does not give voltage. And how many connections does it have.? Many thanks for your advice Hoddbod. |

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
It will have 7 connections. 3 for the volume control and 4 for the mains on/off. You must wire it up as an exact copy of the original.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
The Bowood site states that it has a D.P. (Double Pole) switch, so there will be 7 connections, three for the potentiometer (Volume control), of which the centre terminal is the wiper (variable part), whilst the LH tag (as viewed from the rear) is normally the common, usually negative, connection and the RH tag the input, to which the signal is connected. The switch, at the rear, will have two pairs of tags, one pair switches the mains neutral, the other the mains Live. Wiring this pot. should be a simple matter of noting which wires are connected where on the old control and transferring them correctly to the new one. Most Importantly. Do not mix up the connections to the mains live and neutral leads. I am assuming the vcontrols on this player are hard wired, rather than fitted on a Printed circuit board.

Re: Dansette Challenge 100 Switches
Edward and Livewire has given you very comprehensive answers, no point me repeating the information.
Should be a straightforward replacement.
