Default Re: Guess the make of this TV?

Spencer West was an absolute genius at winding coils with excellent 'Q'.

They produced a range of very high quality, low noise pre amplifiers and frequency converters that were employed during the Band 1 era. With the arrival of Band 3 and the notorious aerial converters the problem of patterning due to Band 1 breakthrough was a big nuisance for repair guys.

Spencer West designed and produced the '54 Pattern Removal Unit', an ingenious device that fed part of the Band 1 signal in antiphase to the Band 3 signal thus cancelling out the unwanted BBC signal. It was a very efficient unit and was supplied and recommended by the GPO as part of their interference tracing section.

They also carried out a lot of early development work with printed circuits and were advisors to Pye, the first UK maker to use them in the PAM 500 model.

Unfortunately by the late 50's most of the products produced by Spencer West were becoming obsolescent, resulting in them deciding to enter TV manufacture.
This was a very bad time to consider this and it was never a real success for them unfortunately.

As David mentioned, many manufacturers went under or were taken over during the period 1960-62 due to lack of sales with the uncertainty of UHF and 625 lines possibly making existing receivers obsolete overnight!

EKCO, MURPHY, PILOT, ULTRA, PETO SCOTT, COSSOR, PHILCO, GEC, FERRANTI, ENGLISH ELECTRIC, EMERSON, MASTERADIO, EMI and VIDOR had all vanished as manufacturers and of course Spencer West by 1962.

Regards, John.
