Default Civilian Receiver Cabinet (and other bits)

Hi,
I've pulled a civilian set out of the round tuit pile and have some questions.

Firstly, the decal on the top of the cabinet is very grubby. Is there any way that I can clean this up?
Secondly, can I preserve the decal whilst cleaning up the set for refinishing?
Thirday, a more general question. How do I determine what version of the set is this and where can I find a circuit/description for it. It has a serial number U20 11676.

All help gratefully received.

Cheers

Robin

Code U20 says it's a McMichael.

On the other points, there's been numerous threads on the WCR cabinet in the past including this one. Not too sure if there's been anything specific about cleaning the existing label though; most people, including myself, seem to produce a replacement.

Thanks for that. What did your reproduced one come out like?

Hi Robin,

I've attached a image of the label I made for my WCR. Please note, however, that I made a serious error in that the corners of the black border should have a radius. My image is slightly out of focus but gives a clear idea of what it looks like.

We once had a lengthy thread on the WCR label and reproductions thereof. However, I deleted it as part of the archiving procedure a long time ago. Why?....many of the images vanished for some reason, opinions differed too greatly regarding font style and dimensions...etc etc. There was also reference to a 'professionally' produced repro label which, sadly, had a serious spelling error. 'Receiver' was mispelt, as I recall.

This thread is still young, so I'd hang on a bit longer to see if anyone has any tips for cleaning your existing label. Failing that, make a repro but take onboard the advice given in the thread which I gave a link to earlier regarding cabinet finish.

Meantime I'll put out a request for members to post images of their own repro, or good original, labels then see if I can cobble together some sort of reference for the forum archives..........

If any members would oblige with this, please post your images (and other details concerning the label) in this thread and I will edit/sort it out in due course. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Darren,
Your image is very interesting. Mine is gold with red lettering. I guess there were loads of different types.

I'll hang on to the thread .

Has anyone got a circuit?

Here's the label from my Solectric mains model (according to the lists I've seen they only made battery sets, but that's by-the-bye: the U41 chassis stamp couldn't be clearer). Far from perfect, but it gives an idea of the (or an?) original font.

I think that confirms it, they are all different. I guess each supplier had to make their own so they did what they fancied within the guidelines that the government gave them.

My U12 (Burndept) has the original label in fairly good condition. It's identical to Paul_RK's thumbnail other than for colour (slight difference), which would be subject to fading, polish and any other ravages of time. I suspect these labels might well have been "centrally" supplied - many things were in war time.

Leon.

Hi Leon,
They may well have been but I have in the short space of this thread seen three completely different ones (including my own). The only common thread is the three rows of words that are the same and possibly the type font. The colour (both fore and background) and the border (present - not present) are all different in each one.

I don't have a Civilian Receiver so I've never printed it. I made it for an earlier thread and out of boredom

Cheers

Hi Robin,

The quality of the posted image has not been reduced in any way, so you can use that.

I've written the, total, printable size on the bottom right. Just make sure it doesn't need resizing before you print it

Regards
David

Has anyone else seen one of these labels with black font ? When I made mine (see post #4 above) I simply copied what was already there with regard to font style and colouring.

hi

Well the label on mine looks as though it has red lettering with gold background... but cannot read it, it is red though.

The cabinet cleaned up really well and now looks new. but inside rust is the main problem.

Pete
